Default most commonly used CC numbers?

So, I have a few controllers with a bunch of programmable knobs to use with reaper.

It would be neat if I could use these controllers right out of the bat w/midi -

what are peoples workflow for this?

Are there commonly used Midi CCs for midi?

My one controller has 8 knobs and a mod/pitch bend thingy. My others have at least that if not much more.

What 8 CC's should I assign to have the greatest likelyhood of just loading up a vsti and having some programmable parameters?

Or is it simply just easier to let it be and assign in reaper and have default mappings?

thanks

Thats modwheel, breath, volume, and expression

Those are the ones I'm using most of the time. But Breath of course you would not assign to a knob to expressly play with, but you might choose to set an absolute knob for it so that you can operate synths without the breath controller if you already have linking done. I do this so I don't get zero sound when I choose not to use it on a set up that has breath controller linked to volume and envelopes.

12-19 are pretty safe and 12 and 13 may even do something in some synths like control cutoff filters.

i think cc74 is normally the recommended controller for filter cutoff.

to the op - the MMA do have a list of what they recommended for each controller when they introduced the MIDI standard, but it is up to each manufacturer or programmer to adopt it.

I would suggest either Fergler's method or reason mode (cc 8..48 mainly) or anything else you like. If you have multiple controllers, my tip would be assigning similar or equal values on them, especially if you have an easy way of changing the midi channel, if not via the hardware, you could do it via software (inside or outside Reaper). Based on midi channel their meanings could change. Also switching not all parameters but a partial set to another channel can be useful, parameters you want to access always, you could keep, e.g. for bass and kick and master or whatever is very important, the rest you could switch.

Hopefully soonish Reaper will be midi mapping heaven, with community shared midi_mappings.txt, which can be saved, shared, loaded into Reaper. The idea is mapping the Reaper project to your hardware, not the opposite. The parameters will come to your controls, automatically, based on rule definitions inside midi_mappings.txt
