Hi.
On the main toolbar, there is a button for enabling auto crossfade.

Have you checked that button to see if it's enabled?

Sorry to say:
Automatic creation of xfades after punch-in recording is not possible in Reaper (yet). Period.

worked it out. options - new recording overlaps existing media item - tick trim (tape stye). you only get one take but it put auto cross fades in at punch in/out points. nice

Default crossfade not working on reaper 5

Hi everyone , PLEASE HELP! I have been dragging this problem for months, when I overlap items in the same track I only get a fade in , the front track is cut to 0 without fading , it's driving me crazy , I am using too many tracks and I find the setting completely useless and idiotic. I cannot thing of any scenario when this would be useful. I find all sorts of settings but nothing brings back the original cross fade behavior. PLEASE HELP if anyone has experienced this, it must be a preference/option/setting which I must be able to correct quite easily. I just don't understand why is it so hard to find in the action/preference menus !
