Default OSC and MIDI, and networking

I've seen (and read) lots of cool stuff about OSC, especially the guys that have made bi-directional comms with their Behringer hardware. I'm really interested in getting this working, but having lots of problems. running windows 7 x64 - haven't yet configured for DAW.

I've read recommendations on disabling internet activity, and wondered if you can use an OSC device without networking...

is anyone having any joy with ios osc, perhaps via usb?

I don't know if I need some MIDI Bridge software, to get bi-directional OSC, and whether ad-hoc connectivity can be achieved if the wifi on my xps is turned off... I could tether my laptop to my router via ethernet, but really interested in getting it going over USB, if it performs as well as I think it might.

GOAL: control reaper (and vst's) via TouchOSC (bi-directional!) on iphone

edit: just found another excellent reaperblog guide (these guys are amazing, illustrating the 'how to' config reaper and osc.. to my delight it's working, getting the track name on the control surface from the DAW via OSC... and the levels are updating, bi-directional magic!

NEXT GOAL: same setup, via usb, AND learning how to create, and switch between, surfaces...
step 1 (usb) done.
