Tascam US-600
I recently picked one of these up for a good price. I wanted 4 outputs, but until I got it home I didn't notice they fudged what "4 outputs" means. It means one pair RCA l/r outputs and a S/PDIF.
Question: if I were to pick up a second pair of nearfield monitors for a quad setup, would the S/PDIF work to send audio to those speakers?

I don't think so Kirk, not unless the near fields had an amp that could process S/PDIF to analog.

I may have found a pair:

They're certainly not Genelecs, but I could do worse.

I have a US-600. I keep waiting for it to die so I can go buy a new interface, but the thing keeps on trucking. I use the line outs to drive a cheap class-D amp and it works great for my "low end" monitoring.
You might consider an external amplifier with digital inputs. That would be reusable and wouldn't require you to go buy a whole new pair of monitors.

That's cool!
I already have a pair of powered KRK Rokit 5s that take up the line outs. I don't know how an external amplifier would help me, unless I could still use my powered monitors with it.
I suppose I could run my S/PDIF connection out to it and use passive rear monitors.

You answered your own question.
Let the amplifier amplify, and then you can use whatever monitors you want. If you like your KRKs, get another pair.

I don't follow. How would I use four speakers off one dual RCA output?

You wouldn't. One pair would be driven by the line out on the US-600, the other pair would be driven by the amplifier, which receives it's input from the 600's S/PDIF out.

That's what I thought.

Also, make sure you can use the analog outs and sp/dif simultaneously. I suspect this works, otherwise Tascam would be misleading you even more.

I don't think Tascam misled anyone at all. It's got four outputs, as advertised.
Each is routable from the internal mixer.
