Play from position regardless of edit cursor

I would like to do this:

Set up a play position somewhere (e.g. at the beginning of a loop).
Zoom in somewhere else, and do edits (which moves edit cursor).
Play and stop playing from saved play position without changing view position.

Is there an easy way to do that? It seems like start/stop play is always tied to edit cursor, but where you want to edit and where you want to play from is not always the same thing.
