Donations:
Unnecessary to use this theme since I would be making it for myself regardless. However, if you enjoy using this theme a small $5-$10 donation helps show there is interest to keep me motivated for future features and improvements and is usually enough to help pay for a small pint of my favorite American whiskey Kessler's "Smooth As Silk...". What can I say, I'm blessed with having bad taste.

Default About this theme (Lot's of blah, blah, blah)

Theme Design Overview: This theme was developed with the following intents in mind.
- Provide a UI which better communicates Reaper’s functionalities which are easier to understand for novice users over the default theme.
a. No hidden TCP/MCP buttons which only become visible upon record enabling tracks.
b. I/O, Rec Input and Source Record buttons which better communicate functionality and current status, on top of UI.
c. Minimize use of text labels, making them more obvious they are a button on TCPs and MCPs.

- Provide higher contrast colors and quick glance status indicators. (No 20 shades of grey, in an effort to reduce eye strain).
- Group TCP/MCP button layout arrangements and button images to better align with common hardware mixing console familiarity.
- Maximize single screen lap-top use re-size useability to user preferred primary focus areas while still providing access to key functions of non-primary reduced size items. P.S. It works well on multiple screens also. 😉
- Allow resizing of items which tend to bring more value when enlarged in size when needed (ex. Track Labels, Record Source Input labels, Meters, Volume and Pan slider controls)
- Provide User preference workflow layout options for TCP/MCP/Transport/Automation controls. (Examples: Sliders vs knobs, Vertical vs Horizontal meters, Wide vs Narrow channel strips, Bus vs Folder Tracks, various transport button arrangements and sizes).

Who May Enjoy using this theme?
- New/Novice Reaper users
I tried to make things easy to understand. (KISS=Keep It Simple Stupid) 😉 I also included a toolbar added on, making it easier to use and find Reaper's built-in
Actions/Features.
- Vegas and Acid Pro users: Many UI design functions were borrowed from Vegas and Acid Pro. This theme is my personal vision of what Vegas/Acid may have looked like if those developments hadn’t become stagnant, out-dated, passed between developers but with all the great functions, stability and light-weight of Reaper built into it.
- Fans of Commala Theme: This theme originated from the “Commala 2018” theme where some of those elements are still being used while most of the images have been revised, bugs fixed, distorted images fixed, left over Default 5 theme items removed/revised. 90% of the Commala rtconfig has been re-written in an overall effort to make this theme feel like everything belongs together. It wasn’t a cut and paste of multiple sections borrowed from other themes. If you liked the Commala theme, you may enjoy what I consider to be improvements in this theme.

Who May NOT Enjoy using this theme?

- ProTools, Logic, Cubase, Studio One and Ableton Live, etc DAW Users: I haven’t had an opportunity to create any layout options which resemble these DAWs. There’s plenty of other themes which have done a fine job already in these areas. In the future I may provide some layout options which resemble the TCP/MCP/Transport functionality of these other DAWs but to keep theme size down it wouldn’t include images from these other DAWs, but functionality resemblance is within scope for future releases if there is enough interest.

Special Thanks
Commala for creating a great theme foundation starting point
Pipelineaudio for early build feedback.
lucas_LCS for answering my questions as I navigated the theming learning obstacles.

Default Theme Add-Ons

To get the most out of this theme I recommend installing the following Add-ons.

SWS Reaper Extension
If you haven't installed the SWS extensions, then why not? They provide additional functionality to Reaper.
Download and install SWS Extension from here: https://www.sws-extension.org/

Toolbars
If you're new to Reaper and haven't configured your own customized toolbars, you will likely find installing these toolbars to be helpful in getting the most out of Reaper's capabilities with minimal effort. Installing these toolbars will save you time and effort of having to memorize keyboard short-cuts and going through Reaper's action menu to create your own. I have gone through and already assigned useful and common actions along with their associated toolbar button images. These toolbars will be updated in future releases (ie more MIDI custom toolbars to come).

How to Install TOOLBARS
1. Download and save to your PC the Reaper Toolbar Configuration File.
Toolbar Configuration File Download Link:
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1hc8...usp=drive_link
2. Open Reaper and navigate to the top menu OPTIONS>PREFERERNCES>General

3. Click on the "Import configuration" button
4. Browse to where you downloaded and saved the file in step 1 and select Open.
5. Ensure Menus and toolbars is checked and click the "Import" button.
*Note this will import and overwrite the Filename "reaper-menu.ini" into your Reaper installation folder. If you have previously configured custom toolbars, then it is recommended you export and back them up prior if you decide you want to restore them. The Default toolbars can always be restored without prior backup.

6. Restart Reaper
7. After restart, if you haven't done so already I would suggest right clicking in the newly added Main toolbar and selecting POSITION TOOLBAR> and selecting "AT TOP OF MAIN WINDOW".

Default Notes/Comments

Cursors Pack
Some of Reaper's default cursors looked quite long in the tooth and were difficult to see in some instances, where I have updated the ones which looked like they belonged back on my Atari 2600 game console.

Download Link:
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1hx9...usp=drive_link

Revised Cursors Overview

How to Install CURSORS
1. Download and save to your PC the file: RiVOA_Cursors_v1.0.ReaperConfigZip
2. Open Reaper and navigate to the top menu OPTIONS>PREFERERNCES>General

3. Click on the "Import configuration" button
4. Browse to where you downloaded and saved the file in step 1 and select Open.

5.Reaper will prompt for confirmation, click OK

6. Click Import

7. Reaper will restart and new cursors will be loaded.

In case you don't like some of the installed cursors and wish to go back to the Reaper defaults, here's how to uninstall them.

How to UN-Install CURSORS
1. Locate your Reaper resource folder by going to OPTIONS>SHOW REAPER RESOURCE PATH IN EXPLORER/FINDER

2. Reaper will open a file browser on your machine, browse to the "Cursors" folder.
3. Delete all the *.cur files, and restart Reaper.

After clicking on Link, check to see if your browser has a download button. I'm using Firefox and was able to download after clicking on the button circled on the right.
Unfortunately Theme is 2.7MB in size and exceeds Reaper's STASH 2MB size limitation.

It is an excellent theme. The only thing i do not like, are the white regions you draw. It would much better for me if the regions had the same color as the tracks.

Thanks for your comment. Are you referring to the white background color of the media items(ie waveform background) when not selected? If not, posting a pic could be useful so we can ensure we're using the same terms since "tracks" and "regions" often mean different things to different folks.

If you're referring to the media item background white color, that can easily be modified to preference through the theme tweaker. If you loaded the toolbars, theme tweaker can be accessed by pressing on this button on the theming toolbar.

Once in the theme tweaker type "media" in the filter box.

Those media item background colors can be modified by changing these 2 color adjustments.

If you haven't loaded the toolbars, then I can provide further instructions to access the theme tweaker if you're unfamiliar.

I'm glad you brought up the topic of user preference adjustments. Something I haven't mentioned about this theme is that I tried to develop it in a manner that user preference adjustments can easily be made without having a deep understanding of theming or how to write WALTER code. I will provide further instructions in this thread on how to make some of those preference adjustments in future posts.

Things that will be supported with some simple user adjustments.
- Font types (still under development)
- Font Colors and their backgrounds
- Color adjustments to TCP, MCP, Transport, etc (ie light, dark, medium color modes)
- Color adjustments to Arrange view items

As a new user, you will want to eventually get familiar with Reaper's Actions menu. Essentially, anything you can do in Reaper is tied to an underlying "Action"

I'll provide you your 1st dose with theme tweaking.

1. On top menu items goto ACTIONS Menu.
2. Select "Show Actions List..."
3. In filter of Actions List Window, type "theme tweak"
4. Click/Select that item which appears (there should be only one with that filtered text) and then click on "Run" button
*Note all those above steps take place with the 1-click of the toolbar button I mentioned previously. That is what custom toolbars in Reaper can do for you once created.

Now if you did everything correctly from above, you will be viewing the theme tweaker window.
5. Type in "media" in the theme tweaker window filter text entry box.
6. Click on each of the 2 color settings I have circled and adjust their color to your preference. (You will see them update once you click OK)

7. Once you like the colors you selected, then click on the "Save Theme..." button. Give it a different name like "RiVOA Modified"

8. Congrats! You just made your own personalized theme!
Now under OPTIONS>THEMES menu you will see my original theme name and your new "RiVOA Modified" theme name. Make sure yours is selected. If you want to go back and start over or try other color adjustments, then select my original theme which should be listed as "RiVOA v.50" and start over or further play around with color adjustments for your modified theme. Adjustments don't get committed permanently until you click on the "Save theme..." button. Whichever theme you have active is the one that you will be modifying when you are in the Theme Tweaker window.

This is amazing, and as a former (frustrated) Acid Pro user, you have this perfect, even down to the flashing Cursor!

Does your Theme, allow for importing a loop and it snapping to the tempo (easy I guess) but then, like in Acid, right click the loop and it shows the 'perfect tempo' of that loop ie: 123.756bpm (down to 3 decimal points)

I then click this, and the whole project tempo jumps and snaps to 123.756bpm!

Could never get this to work in Reaper like in Acid??

When I do this on a kick drum loop in Acid, it would make sure the Kick loop (which is quite vital) to not stretch and the whole project would be snapped to the Kick

Can this be done above with a right click, or action/macro button press?

PS: Also I loved Acid Pro 3.0 which had a grey timeline colour. Can I make a v3.0 Acid Theme from yours?

Glad you like it!

The thing to keep in mind about Reaper is that it will do most anything Acid Pro can do. However, getting Reaper's Options setup so that it functions like Acid is where there tends to be some growing pains for users just coming over from Acid. I tried to address these items through custom toolbars, to reduce the growing pains. Pretty much every menu item, option configuration, function and view is tied to an underlying "Action", found under Reaper's Actions menu. All those actions can be assigned to a button with whatever button icon image you want to assign to it and then added to a custom "toolbar". Not as simple as Acid's "display icon on toolbar" but way more powerful and customizable. Reaper would have well over 1000 icons to chose from since it includes way more functions than Acid. This is something I will continue to work on with this theme in expanding the toolbar button function actions. I'm working my way towards having those 1000+ functions tied to a toolbar button, I currently have about 200.

Here's a quick demo I put together of doing Acid style loop sequencing in Reaper.....Oh, and I also demo what many Acid users have wanted. The ability to record mixes and bus outputs to a track. I can further describe any setup items I may have overlooked if anyone has any troubles getting Acid Style loop sequencing to work as I have shown below.

P.S. Feel free to modify this theme to your personal preferences as needed. Another item I'm working on is to make this theme simple to modify for color preference settings.

This is amazing work! I have tried this myself but I'm not great with the theming aspect of Reaper, but I had trouble getting the item colours correct!

I can't see the screen videos that well, and will try and sit down and watch, but maybe a Youtube channel with these videos on to watch properly?

As I can't see them that well, I take it you've done the Acid Pro 'Loop, One Shot, Beatmapped (disk) modes?

I think I worked out that Loop (was standard), One Shot was Beats (position only)?

I'm Mac only but will see if I can download and install this all correctly

I'll have to get back to you on this with a more in depth explanation. All 3 are possible but there are multiple combination of factors which can take place.

The 1st thing to take into consideration is how your project properties is set up. If set to "beats" then import media will adjust to project tempo by default upon import. If set to "time" then they won't. They can be adjusted after import to "beats" or "Time". However, the match tempo toggle buttons in the explorer view as well as if the media includes embedded tempo data also are factors which come into play.

In my Acid Loop demo, my project properties was set to "Beats" and then I was using Acid Loops which have embedded tempo metadata. Therefore, upon input the loops are imported and stretched to match the project tempo and will adjust when the project tempo is adjusted.

I'll further break-down beat-mapped and one-shots and how to accomplish either depending on what your project properties is set at.

Yep great explanation!

I think how I did it, was that the whole project was set to Beats (Position Length Rate) so most things looped like in Acid.

I also had an action/button to change a particular track to 'Beats (position only)' to act as One Shot for that track so you could flip easily back and forth like in Acid Pro

When project set in beats, and adding a one-shot which doesn't change tempo with the project tempo I've been right clicking on the intended one-shot, select item properties and then selecting Item timebase=Time. However, believe there is other ways to do this without the additional step and need to dig into this more.

There’s an action to do that so it’s just changes the selected track to a different time base

I think Beats position only is closer to One Shot, as it keeps it in sync with the start of the sample.
With Time, and you change bpm, the time based samples would all fall out of sync start

That's a nice interpretation of Vegas.

I felt the current Vegas and especially Acid felt outdated compared to most modern DAWs and NLE's. I therefore, took some liberties and created something more modern yet with a similar user experience as Vegas. Why not take advantage of the benefits of Reaper and incorporate a user experience which most Acid/Vegas users would feel at home with was my thinking going into this?

Would love to hear your thoughts once you've had a chance to take it for a test drive. I should have an update coming out shortly.

Just to clarify, this is indeed brilliant work!

I'm on an M1 Mac runnning Reaper, so would this be worth trying? or as its currently more designed from Windows, would there be certain things missing?

It's worth trying. From my current understanding there are some differences between MAC and PC where fonts/texts may be offset in some areas. Those areas aren't well documented but if I can get some MAC users to try this theme out and post some pics of those areas which don't look right, then I can go back in and put some MAC specific hooks in the rtconfig to try to correct any of those issues identified. I would love to get this theme fully MAC compatible, just unsure what needs to be fixed at this time for MAC.

LOL! I posted some images (no links) showing off the theme and demoing how to do Acid looping in the Acid Forum which is currently filled with the same ole hum drum grumbling posts of "Why does Acid not work for me?". The initial user response excitement was overwhelming but the mods immediately pulled the images down and threatened to ban me. Out of respect, I didn't even mention Reaper's name but said an "unnamed DAW" instead. That was almost like old times in itself.

Even just posting images of this theme which no longer looks anything like Reaper's default has gained me mod attention over there. LOL! Good times!

Hi

A fellow Moderator, Jeff (emmrecs), has previously been in touch with you regarding the placement of links, in some of your comments, for Reaper which are classified as advertising another manufacturers product.

The same applies to posting images, in particular those of the interface theme in this comment.

As it is quite obvious which DAW you are working with, and it is very easy to find the theme you created, I would therefore request that you remove the images from the comment .
The only one I recognize over there from the old crew still riding the Acid/Vegas/Forge apps is rraud. He's on the their beta test team and a mod in the Sound Forge forum, answering the same repeated questions and supporting bug work arounds. I sent him a PM to come over for a visit and take it for a test drive but he seems pretty dedicated sticking with those sinking ships.

This doesn't surprise me as a long time Acid user.

Its a dead duck over there, and the Facebook user forums, all have people complaining and wanting refunds for something they purchased that doesn't work!

Again, this is why your theme, scripts, actions, is a great idea, as its very close to Acid/Vegas but no one had really done it before

Default v.55 release

Version .55 is Live.

Release Highlights:
- 4 new TCP and MCP VCA Layout Options.
- The TCP Master Layouts have been revised so the meter now expands when resizing vertically. This provides the ability to expand the meter so the VU values can be viewed.
- Explorer playback beat grid lines are now easier to view
- Multiple Improvements/Fixes to the MCP and TCP background images

Toolbars and buttons
A total of 336 toolbar button icons have been created.
190 of those are custom icons, where a button was unavailable for a Reaper action in the default theme. 146 are default theme defined buttons which have been custom revised for this theme.

- Toggle/View Toolbar Revised (action additions)

- Explorer Toolbar button additions.
There are 2 button additions in the explorer view which toggle between if the file you double click on loads into the arrange view or into the explorer playback/trimmer view.
Explorer Short-cut buttons have been added to be able to create short-cuts and quickly navigate to your defined common media storage locations.

- Timeline and Region editing Toolbar
A toolbar dedicated to editing sections and regions from the timeline. Copy, Cut, Paste, Delete timeline selected areas and defined regions.

- Mega Toolbar Introduction
This is going to be an ever evolving one-stop-shop toolbar to help in making user custom created toolbars simpler. Think of this how with other apps, you often go into the preference menu, and they provide the ability to display specific toolbar buttons which are most important to your usage. The way to use this is you can audition Reaper actions using the Mega Toolbar buttons, and then copy and paste those buttons/actions to your own custom created toolbars.

This is a quick demo of a common use for the newly added VCA layouts for those who may be unfamiliar with Reaper's Track Grouping and controlling groups of track through a master VCA control.

Give it a try, it should work. I don't own a MAC and haven't been able to test it out. Post anything you notice that doesn't seem right, and I'll fix it.

RiVOA v.60 is Live and Loud!

It now comes with close to 500 custom toolbar buttons, with over 300 of those unavailable in the Reaper Default themes where the intent is to provide toolbar buttons which visually map better to Reaper's 1000s of available actions. Many Automation and envelope editing toolbar button additions along with associated Automation/Envelope Toolbars have been added in this release.

All of the theme's images have been reduced in size and optimized without losing any of their original quality. Theme size went down to 1.7MB from 2.5MB and now is able to be uploaded to Reaper's STASH! It's MAGIC!
Before I upload to Stash, I have many more Toolbar buttons and mapping them to Reaper's actions heading your way in future releases. Expect a lot of focus on Midi Actions and Midi Toolbars in the next release.

I also added a couple VCA layouts with Pan Knobs in the TCP and MCP sections. Hope you enjoy options!

You'll definitely want to install the Toolbar Add-on to fully unlock the capabilities of working in Reaper with ease of use.

Here's all the toolbars along with their custom buttons that you get once installing the Toolbar Add-on in combination with the theme.
The theme includes all the toolbar buttons, but they don't get populated to toolbar actions until you install the Toolbar Add-on.
You even get a Toolbar to launch all your other Toolbars!
