MIDI track (bass) with a VST won't play back in Reaper.
So I got a new bass VST (SHB-1). It works fine when the signal is coming from a DI recording. I can put it on tracks I've already recorded and it sounds bassy and works.
But I get no sound when I'm trying to play back from a MIDI item. I have a Guitar Pro bass track (1 track, no other instruments). I export it as a MIDI file.
Go into Reaper >> Insert Media File, it puts the MIDI track there. I apply my VST to that track. But no sound... (This was all I had to do to get a drum VST working from midi, and no problems there). I see the small red light near the volume meter turn on as if something is playing, but nothing registering on the volume bar.
When I first import the bass midi, Reaper asks if I want 'Multichannel on single track', or the one with 2 tracks. Does this matter? I tried both, no luck.
I searched online. I made sure to set all notes on midi map to channel 1. Nothing.
I went into the I/O settings and set the top line (under midi input) to channel 1. Nothing.
I tried, right click item >> 'Item source settings' and midi source is by default set to channel 1. I click the checkmark and ok. Doesn't work.
I tried moving the midi map note clusters up or down to any octave I could try, still no playback. Is there another way to change octave other than just dragging notes? I'm rolling the mouse over the piano roll but no sound across any of the ~115 or so notes. I can manually place a note anywhere on the map but it doesn't play.
I'm bad when it comes to this stuff so hoping someone here might have an idea.
I can upload some pics if needed.

SHB-1 is a bass amplifier effect plugin (VST). It's not an instrument plugin (VSTi) and as such doesn't make any sounds.
For a MIDI track you need a MIDI instrument plugin like a synth or sampler to make the actual sound. Then you can process that through SHB-1 (or other effects plugins).

Ample Bass is both free and pretty good. If you want a really great bass virtual instrument, try Toontrack`s EZBass, which does a really great job.

You can also try this Bass vst which is free and sounds "OK" in a mix.

Ah, that makes sense. Thank you.
Thanks for those VSTi recommendations guys. I installed Ample Bass and it plays back the MIDI. So that's great.
Only issue is that it can't be tuned down to B which I need. Lowest it goes is D. The piano roll cuts off below that. I'll have to find one that can be tuned lower. The EZbass looks like it would do it, but it's expensive.

See if you can find a 5-string bass either cheap or free.
I have to say that, as a bass player, I would suggest you buy a bass.
There are plenty of perfectly serviceable ones out there for about £30 on up, which is cheaper than most of the plugins.

I think all of the full version Ample basses can tune to B. They were just on sale last week, not sure if that's still going though.

I agree about using a bass. Most of my recording is done with a 5 string Ibanez SR that I rent.
For very fast parts though, 16th or 32nd note bass hits married to blastbeats, I think MIDI will give better tightness, precision and individual note attack, and minimize flub.

Good to know, thanks. Yeah mine is the lite version.

Reason: Ibanez SR not RG
