Default Align grid to kick?

So, I imported tracks (no click, free form played) and can't figure out how to adjust the grid line spacing to match the kick (more or less). If I change the BPM of the project the grid lines stay in the same place :-O .

Nothing fancy needed, just want lines at approximately 1/4 notes, don't care if it drifts throughout the song (for now).

Check out the action:
Set project tempo from time selection (detect tempo)

Select a visible measure first (4 beats)

Tried that, just tried it again, no joy :'( .

So, there's no manual way to adjust this? <I hate DAWs LOL>

Some-time later> I tried creating a project with just the kick track, no joy. I tried editing a measure so it had no extra kicks in it, just the 1-2-3-4 and no joy with that either.

SWS have actions to help with this:
Code:
SWS/BR: Move closest grid line to mouse cursor (perform until shortcut released)
SWS/BR: Move closest measure grid line to mouse cursor (perform until shortcut released)
Tie them to shortcut keys, hold the mouse over the kick item close to a grid line, and press the shortcut. As long as the shortcut is held down, the grid line follows the mouse cursor, so you can position it at the transient of the kick. Once you get the hang of it, you will be able to adjust the grid to the song very quickly.

It helps if you first adjust the BPM of the project to the rough average of the song, so that the grid lines fall close to the kick transients. In that case, be sure to not have "Timebase for items/envelops/markers" set to "Beats (position, length, rate)" unless you want to have the item stretched to fit the new BPM (I have mine set to "Beats (position only)").

^^^This is the fastest & easiest I've found.
Except I set the timebase to Time, not Beats, to avoid altering the audio.

"Beats (position only)" does not alter the length of the audio, it only moves the item to keep it at the original beat position. "Time" keeps it at the same time position, and when changing BPM it makes more sense to me to have the item at its original beat position. Also. MIDI items are handled more intuitively (in my opinion) with the setting "Beats (position only)".

But of course, both settings have their uses.

I am glad you agree on the method, even though not on that detail

This ended up being my problem, I can now set the project's BPM to the track's actual BPM and have it (mostly) align with the track. Thanks!
