Default Remote Transport - Not Remote Desktop

Is there (can there be) a remote-like Windows app that is JUST the transport, and maybe a few other transport functions that can run on an old Windows Surface - touchscreen only?

Windows Remote Desktop is not a viable alternative, period. I do this with a laptop, hate it, and it's a complete no-go on the small Surface. This question come out of trying to use WRD and finding it totally unusable, even though it functionally gets the REMOTE part done.

Preferred would be a standalone mini-transport app that works across home networking, and is completely touchscreen happy. (no mouse, no keyboard, and doesn't take over the other main computer).

I suppose iPad folks are used to being able to do this stuff. I have an old Windows Surface (32G) that is pretty much useless. It's not fully functioning Windows, but some simple Windows apps can run on it.

Reaper can be controlled via web browser interfaces (there are a few included already).

Super Bad News - at the moments.

This worked great for the rest of the day yesterday, and much of the day today. Then is stopped, and no longer works at all, with a caveat.

A Windows Update came down the Microsoft Surface, the machine I intended to use for this great feature. This update killed it. I have no idea why. Still looking.

I can see the Microsoft Surface in the networking on all other machines. The other machines can see the Surface.

The Surface is running Windows 8 (8.1 most likely). All other machines are running Windows 10.

This great remote transport function works perfectly on ALL other machines.

The IP address is correct, and hasn't changed unexpectedly. I've typed in rc.reaper.fm with out my ID. That page does come up in the surface. It asked doe the ID. Enter the ID, the address changed to the visible IP address, and then fails to find the web page. It SHOULD ask for the ID and Password, like on all other machines, but nothing. It can't resolve the IP address anymore. Typing in the exact known IP gives the same failure.

I've not given up, but this is frustrating, and it keeps me realizing that there's a reason I've had ZERO use for this Microsoft Surface since day one.

(no, I didn't buy it - it free at work - new - a memento of a job.....well....done....not well-done in our opinion even then)

A bit more follow-up:

Seems that I was correct that a Windows Update killed this functionality.

Windows Surface RT 32G doesn't allow user customization of the system firewall. It's blocking both in and out on pretty much any thing from the other machines. I've created rules to allow port 8080 and to allow unsecured access, as much as that can be done, but Reaper on the local network is still being blocked.

Yes, this DID work, and it worked until Windows Update patched security. As a matter of fact, some user customizable things in the system firewall settings that were available can no longer be changed, even though many aren't grayed out.

Web Control still works just fine from the other machines in the house, just not this old Surface.

If any one knows any hacks to get around this let me know.

I'm not going to worry about it much more. It was nice while it worked - a good 6 hours, then the update fixed things.

That's sad to hear.
But couldn't you roll back the update?

Possible, but this hardware is the first Microsoft Surface to be released. The OS is Windows RT, a special version of Win8.1 for 32bit ARM architecture. It's missing a lot of expected Windows things (many added back on Surface Pro). I'll check to see if rolling back is possible.

This MAY be it, but it's a good starting point nevertheless:

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/...8-ba5c15b400fd

ADDITION:
Some of the things that are suggested don't exist.

"Go to Start , and select Control Panel > Programs > View installed updates"

My Surface doesn't have a Start Menu, even when in Desktop mode, and the option to enable is isn't there. It goes the Win 8 Start Screen, and many things are just not there. They may be on the machine, but finding them is a challenge. There is no "Programs" in the Control Panel. No doubt "Installed Updates" in there somewhere.

There is no way to disable updates either - already tried to disable that. Even if rolled back preventing them from coming back may take a hack.
