Default "Takes" very basic question

I've never used "Takes" before and am trying to wrap my head around how they work, coming from a Pro Tools playlist background.

I'm working in sound design, and would like to use "Takes" as a place to store "options".

Can I designate a space as a new empty take (no audio) and then move audio clips into that space, to then use as an option at that place on the timeline?

One main point is that the length of the "option" might not match the existing spot exactly.

Example:
So in the attached image, I'm looking to insert the 2nd clip (orange) in place where the first (green) clip is as another take. I made these not match length or channel wise, to see if it can be done.

I'm assuming takes have to match in length, so how would I go about this in this case?

FYI I'm not doing any recording, like making multiple passes of a vocal. This is purely being used in post sound with designed sounds from my library.

Right click on both items -> Items/Takes-> Implode items in same track across takes. Move the orange clip to the green clip so that they're overlapped before you do this.
