Default Reaper for ARM cpu's

Hi

Considering ARM cpu are becoming very powerful now, and will obviously have more and more market share in the future, how hard would it be to port reaper to this architecture ?
Esp with windows 8 supporting it (even though id prefer linux/android etc support).
There will be strong laptops soon, using quadcore nvidia kalel for instance...

Thanks

Would probably be a lot of work to port the js effect code, I imagine...

That's probably the most assembler infested part of Reaper, otherwise I have the understanding there isn't extreme amounts of processor spesific code in Reaper. I still wonder what would be the real point of an ARM port, really...? Surely someone who wants to use a laptop for audio work will just buy a known-to-work one with a x86/64 CPU.

It's all fine and nice to speculate about how things might be 5-10 years from now, but small companies like Cockos have to think in more short term what makes sense.

I think the opposite, a small company like Cockos would gain a lot le reputation, being the first to do such a thing.
Moreover, Arm will be leading the cpu market share quickly.

Maybe for cell phones or other toys like ipads. But PC market share not likely. ARM are actually not very powerful at all. They are efficient, but offerings from Intel are just way more powerful.

With that said if it's easy to do I don't see why Cockos shouldn't make Reaper and all their other software compatible with ARM.
Good luck finding any VSTs to run on ARM though.

the new android tablets have quad core processors, much more powerful than the computer i recorded a lot of albums on 10 years ago.

How so?

This is an old thread from 2011. And today, there is an ARM7 version of Reaper available for download.

There are strong rumors that there will be (first) MacOS and (then) Windows for ARM based Desktops and Laptops in the near future. Of course, Linux, Android and iOS on Arm is a fact, anyway.

So it's great to see that Reaper is prepared.

OTOH, the plugin and hardware (driver) manufactures seem to be slow when it comes to such kind of upgrades to their products.

There is already a "sort of" Windows on ARM, for the Raspberry Pi. It is not a desktop OS, but a kind of a remote control solution for scripts developed on a Windows PC, running on the Raspberry. And isn't there a server version on ARM too? There are ARM powered servers from a number of brands and I seem to remember some of them offering Windows server.

There is already a lab version of MacOS running on ARM. That doesn't mean it will be released some day and Apple is very secretive about it. They had OSX running on Intel ten years before release too. There was a Snow leopard version running on PPC too, but that never got released. Snow was Intel only by the time it got released.

Wait and see. There's a lot more difference between ARM processors then there is between X86 processors. That's Intel's only strong point atm: the available code base.
