Default Please explain Overlay

Hello there, I love most of these new advanced themes, thinking of doing one myself, but I am a bit confused about overlay images. What exactly are they for?

What is the point in drawing two images on top of each other when you can do that i GIMP or whatever you are using, and merge them to one image to save the drawing.

Am I missing something here, is there stuff that the ordinary image does that the ol image does not and vice verse?

There are two aspects:

1) the overlay image can draw outside of the region of the button (for shadows etc).

2) The overlay image is drawn last, after all the other buttons are drawn. This way shadows/highlights in this image are drawn OVER other buttons...
