Default Listening to overlaid tracks - a question

If you have a track, and you copy and paste a short section from somewhere else over that track, when playing back, one will hear main track, then the short section, then the main track. Is it possible to bypass the overlaid track so one can hear the main track underneath it? I can delete and paste it back in, but that seems awkward.

One way that I think works is to mute the section on top with the item mute.

Go to preferences, appearance, media to turn on the item buttons. (or you can right click, item properties, mute. but the buttons on the item are easier).

Thanks. That worked, but I have a new and related problem. I'm actually pasting in three tracks (guitar bass drums, stacked), and when I go to select them ( in order to mute those three parts, or lock them) I can select one part, but when I hold shift and left click to select another related part, it's selecting everything in the vicinity. I can't select just two or more overlaid parts.

Probably have to Ctrl+Click to add each item to the selection, rather than Shift+Click to select everything between the first selected item and wherever you clicked.
