Midi knobs

I can't for the life of me work out how to assign THAT VST(i) knob to THIS midi CC value, so I can twiddle the knobs on this little MAudio Oxygen8 and change the resonance on (say) this VSTi here, or this JS effect.

Like you can with the Ableton midi map. The 'control surface' thing seems to be something entirely different...

There is a few way of doing that, but it is plugin dependant. EX: Tassman here doesn't open any of it's automation to Reaper so I have to go trough the built in MIDI learn and record MIDI cc directly. Then Wusikstation has both MIDI learn and opened automation, so I can either Record MIDI cc or use Reaper automation envelopes; the later is just a matter of clicking the track automation button and clicking on "Learn" beside the parameter I want to automate.

So, as I know absolutely nothing of Ableton, more details please?
