I got VU activity but no sound
SOLUTION TO PROBLEM: The audio device settings in Options, Prefereneces, Audio Device and also the ASIO configuration on the same UI. I needed to change inputs from SST 1 to SST 1 audio input and the same with SST 2. Go figure. I was just trying things. Back on the road. Thanks all.
Hi, I'm stuck on page one of the troubleshooter section. I get VU activity
I have monitor input
record output
input midi, all channels
The master is directed to my soundcard, set to all, 1-2.
The output is directred to original channels (no sounds on my midi controller)
The track channels set to 2.
I'm using ASIO4ALL and the sound works fine on other applications (which are not open and monopolizing the sound card).
Thanks anyone for the help.

Do any audio files on any tracks play back to the soundcard?
What are the input and output settings for the audio device in preferences?
VU meters - are you getting midi and audio action when playing the controller or virtual keyboard?
Midi channel - what is controller sending? What is reaper input set to? ( i think you’re saying 2, i would set it to all channels) what is reasynth set to receive on?
What output you trying to record, audio or midi?
Answers might help narrow down the issue. It seems you’re not getting any sound at all to the soundcard based in ehat you are saying.

Didn't solve the symptom, but the menu about record output stereo with latency compensation looked familiar, so I think you solved one of the problems. Merci beaucoup.

I get midi notes in the track in Reaper when I press keys on either the controller or the reaper virtual keyboard, but no sound, as with playback. Other audio files play fine. I had a problem with YouTube monopolizing my soundcard in another app many years ago, but I have everything else closed. I tried direct sound and other options other than asio4all, but no difference. Audio recording only moves the vu meter on the master, but none in the track.

The asiorall routing is to the onboard mic for input (the problem?, but no other options and I want to record midi) and for SST1 and SST2 for output, the default sound card outputs i think).
I switched to record output, but no midi notes or any notes appeared when I started the recording and played the keyboard.

I have it set for all channels. It's the master route that I have set for two channels.
I tired to change theASIO configuration, but the only one that works for at least getting midi to record midi notes and the vu meters to jump is the top setting for realtek audio.
What output you trying to record, audio or midi?
I am trying to record midi. Audio will also not record.

I might be stating the obvious, but sometimes we overlook the obvious, so I'm not trying to insult your intelligence, but...
You didn't mention what device you have that should actually give you sound, (virtual instrument). You do have some kind of VSTi inserted in the channel you want sound from, right?
Other than that, what mat chat suggested is often the solution.

I think no one should be afraid to state the obvious in newbieland ! Sometimes it's the first time that the user is opening a DAW, so I think no one would accuse you to insult ones intelligence I hope our suggestions solved the problem though.

“ Audio recording only moves the vu meter on the master, but none in the track.”
This statement confuses me. If this track is the only one, not sure how the master has audio and the track does not.
“ I get midi notes in the track in Reaper when I press keys on either the controller or the reaper virtual keyboard, but no sound, as with playback. Other audio files play fine.”
It doesn’t confuse me if you have other audio tracks that are playing in this song.
It would help to understand your input and output settings on this track and any routing on this track.
Midi activty on the track indicates that your input setup seems to be working from keyboard to Reaper. There seems to be a disconnect getting it to the vsti. It’s puzzling though that reasynth doesn’t play, it appears to receive on all midi channels.
“ The track channels set to 2.”
What do you mean by this? Is reasynth set up to receive on midi bus 2? Have you tried another vsti?
