Default Adding picture to project

Hi!

I just started to explore editing videos in Reaper and
came across some strange things. When adding a jpeg to
a track with video on it, and trying to make a cross-fade
between the two I cant get it to look nice. There is a
blackout in the middle of cross-fade.

I am using Item fades to make the transition and when
using only video on the track the cross-fades work excellent.

What am I doing wrong when mixing videos and jpegs?

Crossfading between 2 items on the same track can be tricky (up to the point I decided to write my own presets for crossfading). From my personal experience it's better to put the 2 items on different tracks. The "top" track will always mask out the "bottom" track. If you fade-in/out an item on a top track, you will get what you're looking for.

First thing: go under project settings -> video tab. Make sure you set video project dimensions to avoid weird behaviors. Also set the "Video item visibilty" to your preference: this is where you decide how "top/bottom" are decided in your project.

Here is an example with a JPG background fading in/out a mp4 video:

and the result:

Thanks papagirafe for your answer! But I tried to place the jpeg on a track above the video with the same result. When the video item ends there is a short blackout in the video output.

I will check out your settings...

How did you make the picture appear on the item? Is it something
you photoshoped?

oh! Now I get it! The blackout is a side effect of the item being loaded and initialized during the edition process, it should/will disappear after rendering. There are some more complex tricks to avoid that but i just learned to live with it.

A static image like a JPEG should appear on the item automatically (unlike videos) unless there is a hidden preference setting somewhere controlling that...

Ok, have to look into the preferences....tested just on another PC and there
it shows just like your image.

Thanks for the help!
