Reaper installed and usable on Zoom H2 handheld recorder
I tried installing Reaper onto my Zoom H2 hand held recorder, operating as a USB storage device, and as one might expect, it worked. Makes it possible to use Reaper to edit H2 recordings away from base on any PC that happens to be available. I've reported this in the Taperssection forums in case it arouses interest in connection with H2 users or users of other handhelds.

This is quite interesting. I've been thinking about getting an H2, as a portable record device. Never thought about using the USB thumb drive/REAPER angle. Do you have a link to the Tapersection forum thread?
Cheers,

Very interesting. I agree, that's pretty much the ultimate in portable. If only you could edit on the device itself...

It seems to me that you'd be better off with a $10 pen-drive and save the H2 for recording only, as I would guess that having the unit on for additional extended periods of time would only lower its lifespan... Just a thought.

Well, possibly, but as it has no moving parts, hopefully it will last for a very long time anyway. When in USB mode the H2 needs no batteries so even they are not being depleted.
I'm afraid that with complete disregard for the future of the planet I tend to leave gear on day and night here, and things seem to last. Eg the DAT deck I use as a D to A converter - it's probably been on for several years now. Still converts nicely, though whether it would play a tape is another matter, as I haven't "exercised" the drive. A friend at the BBC in London told me (admittedly 20 years ago) that all their studios are powered constantly, as things go wrong more often during power down/up than when left on. Not so politically correct these days, though.

After waiting a month, (to avoid the impulse buying temptation) and doing some more research, I just ordered the H2. I am a singer-songwriter guitarist and being able to have this little hand-held portable recording device available whenever & wherever inspiration strikes is a fantastic convenience. I could even pack into the padded storage compartment, of my guitar case when traveling. I like that you can then transfer those recorded files (even as 24bit wave) to your DAW via USB. That you can install REAPER onto an SD card and use the H2, as a USB audio device is icing on the cake.
Cheers,
Billy Buck

I also bought an H2 last week - quite happy with it so far, except it seems to be a little off balance L/R-wise; the left channels is a bit louder when recording with the front mics, and the R channel is quite a bit louder on the rear mics - but I reckon a quite visit to the store will sort that out...
Yay - post #100!
I'm on a theater tour right now (live-snr, which is my main income) where we are in a new theater every night. The H2 is quite handy for quick recording of the various rooms using a balloon pop for later use as impulse reverbs.

At the price, I suspect mic matching would be a bit of a lottery. I've not noticed any significant imbalance with mine but I've not actually tested it for that aspect. So long as it's close, and fixable in post-production, I'd be satisfied. For four-channel recordings don't forget that the 3D panner can be used for playback (and make sure any channel imbalance isn't caused by the panner being active when you didn't expect it).
