Default tips for recording vocals in noisy room

seen a few threads on what mics to use, what effects, what preamps and so forth but what does one do when one has a noisy environment? If I get to close to the mic , I can get too much bass i.e the boom effect, right? still even a bit off the mic gets too much of the "dry" vocal and not the sound of the vocals in the room i.e. what one hears, but if I lay off the mic enough to get the room sound I also risk recording external noises.

I figure that I can try to use a noise gate and eliminate noises below a certain db level, room noise also can be eliminate through "noise profiling" AA does that, can I eliminate sound events based on "frequency"?

What else can I do? All tips appreciated.

thanks

even in decent rooms Ill often enclose the singer with gobos, or even bed matresses if theres nothing else. The trick is getting even isolation. If all you do it cut off the high frequency interactions ( like with a matress often...) you just end up with a muddy mess.

When you say noisy, what is the nature of the noise? crappy rel\flections? Or some sort of environmental noise?

not reflections , I have a decent amount of acoustic foam on the walls, and just a lot of obstructions, no I mean footsteps from above, a car driving by, just incidental noise

Just thought I'd mention;
apart from all the normal studio type things you can do to your enviroment - you can try a decent stage mic - many fantastic live recordings are done in noisy places (stage). Fredy Mercury always used a hand held Sure - in the studio.

Cheers
