Newer Coles mics from this century
Are Coles 40 billion dollar ribbon mics still made so stupid as to be able to be destroyed by phantom power?

I sure hope so. If I buy a Coles I want the risk of it disintegrating in my hands if I look sideways at it.

I think few are actually susceptible if wired properly but that's the concern, the cables etc. they are plugged into. My Royers are wired properly and undamaged by phantom power, but the warning still applies for mis-wired connections. I always quadruple check that phantom is off regardless or put a cloud lifter in between as it will use but completely isolate the mic from the phantom power.

That fethead looks easier to leave connected or hot glue to the mic, is that one ok too?

Put a transformer in the mic?
If it already has a trannie, don't worry. The ribbon is behind the tranny and it won't get hurt.
It's mostly a non-existent problem, really. Most ribbon mics have either a transformer, or an amplifier in front of the ribbon. I don't know why the internet makes a huge problem out of this, while completely neglecting other things.

Yes. I use it regularly. It also works really well for SM57s. The level increase is significant. I bought an Apex 205 because I wanted that old-time radio sound. The Fethead tends to make it sound something like a tube condenser, so it's not quite the AM radio sound I like. However, if you're not looking for that low-fi thing, you'll be more than happy with it.

The FEThead is high impedance...
Doesn't match well with dynamics, or, even worse, ribbons. For ribbons I'd really want a transformer. It's not much higher in price than a FEThead.

You want it's input impedance it higher by at least 10 times or it'll load down and cut high-end.

Yeah, but that thing is in the Mohm range. Some mics definitely sound different. If you're after the vintage sound, loading them down to 5 kohm might fix that. It also adds a tiny bit of noise, of course.
I know it works for both MD21 and MD421.
Why waste the potential gain in a transformer that needs no power, especially if you want a vintage sound?

Well it's a preamp in reality so I'd think if that happened it wouldn't be able to amplify enough - I know what you are saying though, my ADL600 has an impedance switch specifically for that "vintage too low impeadance sound" and I built a buffer for my guitar that I can use to dial in a similar thing

If I want the AM radio announcer or Orson Welles thing, I'll just plug straight into my pre73jr and crank it. Sounds great. Really furry. We have lots of clean gain in 24bit anyway.

There's a very good AM Radio sim, made by Steindork. It's called "AM_Radio_Sim"
https://stash.reaper.fm/v/9490/AM_Radio_Sim.zip
Of course, it's way more than a vintage mic sound. All the typical AM effects included.

Ollie actually has JS version of an AM simulator in the stash FWIW, it's very good if memory serves.

I was confused. Seemed to remember it was Schwa. Could Ollie be Steindork?
Unless there's another AM sim on the stash?
And, yes, it is good. Used it for theatre once. And for fun, too

Good point, I thought it was Ollie but could be wrong.

Nope. The 57 also requires a significant amount of clean gain.
