Default Mackie HUI

I just got a Mackie HUI - the original one from 1998. It doesn't seem to work right. It works a bit through my profire 2626 midi, like the faders and pans stay synched when I move them in Reaper or on the HUI, but I get an error saying can not open midi input and output almost every time I press a button.

When I tried a Pod XT as the midi i/o, it's not really working at all although there seems to be SOMETHING being sent to Reaper. But the faders in reaper just stay stuck at the bottom sort of wiggling in a wierd way like they are recieving the info to move around but are stuck in some way.

Anyone get one of these to work?

As long as you make sure reaper doesn't send timecode to that output or reaper's arrange page can't see the inputs it should work fine. It did for me with my mcu emulated hardware.

Search here for threads started by "klinke". He made a version that is insanely amazing for mcu devices and allows vet mapping and action assignment via editors. Very cool.

Ok as far as I can tell, this HUI I got is the original HUI protocol by definition, which works flawlessly with the latest version of protools as it has for over a decade. I'm getting the impression that being compliant with HUI means being compliant with pro tools.

I don't think it does MCU. It basically doesn't work in Reaper at all. It's a really cool unit, I'd love to get a Reaper skin based on the look of it! It's a nice big solid heavy thing with touch-sensitive motorized faders and everything. The i/o is midi, two different serial port protocols and ps/2 mouse/keyboard passthrough! 8-)

There's an option to turn off that warning in the Reaper MIDI setup menu.

I have the Mackie MCU
- if you select Mackie protocol rather than HUI when you boot up the MCU it will work better
- HUI works better on PT
- I just select the appropriate protocol via a reboot of the MCU. (when you start it up hold down the channel 1 and channel 2 select buttons to get the selection menu on the screen)

I would love to see REAPER's HUI protocol fixed. I have CMLabs MotorMate and MotorMix control surfaces that can use either the HUI protocol (which REAPER partially supports poorly) or CMLabs standard protocol which REAPER doesn't support at all.
Basically, my control surfaces are expensive boat anchors with REAPER but they work perfectly with ProTools.

If anyone can rewrite the HUI protocol for REAPER (tough, I know since Mackie are tight lipped with it) or write a REAPER implementation for the CMLabs standard protocol, I would be willing to pay them.

Dannii's right. The HUI driver is not working very well. I have a d8b in my studio that can go into HUI mode and it's iffy at best with Reaper... mostly unusable.

Another one of those things that got half done and left alone.

Maybe they fixed it since the last time I tried. It doesn't show up at all in Pre 13. Does it still say "Experimental" on the HUI driver?

Anyway, why are you using HUI mode with Reaper instead of the MCU control protocol?

Hmmmm, perhaps the devs have secretly fixed the protocol recently without saying anything?? I'll have to try it out again and see what happens.
