Default Setting up a "Rhythm Gate"

On electronic drum sets, they have a thing called a Rhythm Gate, which is used for practicing timing. If you play in time, the drums sound, if you're off, the sound is gated out.

The following vid shows what I'm talking about.

Don't know if it's possible, but I thought perhaps with Reaper and all you clever people , maybe something could be fashioned for an acoustic set with mics (no triggers).

Thanks for any ideas!

Witti made a great set of jsfx plugin's one of which is called 'gate_midi' in effects/witti/dynamics

You can make a gate track with this it has attack and release parameters to avoid clicks and can be set up very easily and mapped to a midi note.
The 'range of the gate' described in the video can be defined by the note length and position on the grid.

Not that easy to find so here's the link.

You want something that only gates you when you're a little early or a little late. That's tough. And by how much?

I tried to automate ReaGate's threshold but at that speed it just generates cracks and pops in real-time. No matter what I set the hold and release too, even if they are super high, it just sounds like garbage. Not gonna work.

Playing along to delay can be a great way to get it though. That way it copies all of your exact swing but also if you deviate at all you'll hear the flam.

Not sure if this will meet your needs, but couldn't you just set up a volume envelope using a looped automation item or LFO parameter modulation to raise the volume at the beat and lower it else where? I'm thinking maybe a square wave would be best, centered on the beat with whatever +/- tolerance you desire.

Then you get a pumping sound though that would be intolerable. The idea I think is you don't notice anything unless you're off, then your hits are quieter.

That's an interesting idea!
What do you set the delay at?
