Default REAPER freezes at intermediate zoom (video redraw issue?)

For a while, REAPER becomes laggy when I try to zoom (horizontally) into a waveform, but this happens at some intermediate zoom level. When I am zoomed out the REAPER behaves normally, scrolls fast, I have no lag and everything is okay.
When I am zoomed in quite deeply, everything is also fine.
But at the intermediate zoom level (about two seconds of audio on the screen) REAPER becomes all laggy and glitchy and completely unusable (just the video and mouse/keyboard response, audio plays just fine). If I zoom out or zoom in further it's all back to normal again.
What is this?
Are there any relevant settings to tweak?

Any ideas? I store all ReaPeak files in an alternate folder on a regular HDD, so I thought that maybe I should move them to my system SSD, but it doesn't seem to improve things much.

you can set peaks for video items to low quality or off (ignore audio) in Source Properties.

I am dealing only with audio. Or maybe I don't quite understand what you mean?

Hmm, not lossy but FLAC. Can this be an issue?
