Default Theme Requests Wanted! Super Mega Poll Included!

Post your ultimate dream theme ideas here. It may be something completely new, additional layouts or modification to an existing theme, or perhaps a revamped V1-3 theme with full V4 support!

If you know an idea is not technically possible, please don't post that here and instead make a feature request. If you aren't sure either way, don't worry, post it here and we'll let you know.

With enough support I'm hoping it gives themers something fun and meaningful to work towards.

A layout as close to Pro Tools in colors & contrast. I don't think that we can get the fonts-text as clear as PT, but the hues & contrast I think is doable.

And I am not even talking about icons or layouts, JUST the GUI color & contrast....

a theme without any greater than 5px margins anywhere. faders right inside meters. also the ability to select multiple tracks and modify the height of the i/o and fx panels all together.

Continuing to expose various components of the interface thru Walter, could enable the development of advanced themes.
The extmixer, the potential to display fx in the tcp and other improvements to Walter...

well without voting, I'd say your recent trick with the magic resizing transport is the right direction...

I know many people want themes that work better on small laptop screens...

More layouts ...always!

Things I like:

- a MCP layout with just track activity indicators instead of meters, or meters at the top (above the insert FX)

- folder indention in the MCP

(I know there are some themes around where this is available)

There is a checkbox in the prefs: Draw vertical text bottom-up.

When you activate this option, the END of the text is attached to the top.
It should be that the start of the text is attached to the bottom.
When you resize the mixer or the tcp the start of the text in the name label disappears first. ...sigh

Please correct me if i'm wrong. I'm also using this in my rtconfig file: vertfont_topdown 1. But it doesn't seem to work.

So my vote will definitely go for: Things currently not possible with walter.

My second vote will go for: Simpler themes/layouts.
But my opinion is, that this task is quite impossible. Too many buttons.

I would like the default theme WALTERd so we can have a walter just for midi, walter just for audio, just for folder, just for a divider, just for fx send etc. and also each of the walters (depending on the type) have volume, pan & width, track name, fx button, a tiny meter and mute/solo all cramped at its smallest track height, I use this height all the time, it is very important to keep things small. Kinda like this but more like the original theme:

Just have different STACK KNOB for WIDTH and RIGHT PAN would be already an huge improvement from my point of view! (at least i dont have to use 1 pixels hacks like in my theme!)

Also, more "common colors" separated for each element instead of being used by like 23049304 stuffs quite limiting the customizations (MIDI editor, i'm watching at you mostly!)

I just want a modern, somewhat minimalistic, cohesive, unified, uncluttered theme with a nice color scheme. Aesthetics are more important to me than practicality. No current themes are really like this (hell, no current DAWs quite do it for me). Many are plagued by gaudy color choices and tacky track designs (no disrespect to hard-working themers!).

When a track is 'selected' , I would like it to stand out more
With most every theme I've looked, this has been a issue.

I am interested in themes with minimal clutter - where buttons not indicating anything are not visible until hovered over.

I want a theme where the track NAME is very readable -

but which can be narrow to display many many tracks in the TCP

I have little interest in the MCP at all...

I am very interested in different layouts...

for me its all about clearly displaying all information, and otherwise staying out of the way.

It's a combination of things that I look for in themes but it does boil down to this goal, which is achievable in quite a few different ways it seems.

Make me work less.

That means less searching for GUI elements, but can also include a learning period. The default theme for example makes it very easy to locate the "FX" button on the TCP and MCP

Elements required to be accessible for a particular job need to be placed to be easily found.

That's the reason I chose the More layout options for existing themes option, which can also mean optimized layouts for specific tasks.

And each task prioritizes elements as well, which is a good guide to building job-specific layouts in whatever style you're currently working in.

Some job descriptions.
  • Single-track recording (1 performer/instrument at a time)
  • Multitrack recording (live/practice band, church choirs, orchestras, live shows)

Input selection is often done in the Routing matrix and checked in the MCP. Small TCP heights for the actual recording for confidence.

Wedge and headphone mixes done in the MCP. Reaper is as of yet too dumb to flip sends to the main fader which could add additional opportunities for faster live mixing work on any primitive control surface or mouse setup.

  • Single track editing

No recording facilities necessary at all.

  • Multitrack Editing (drums, classical music, conforms of picture recuts in post production)

    No recording facilities necessary.

  • Music Mixing

No recording facilities necessary. I'd add feature requests for simple stuff like send access on the TCP and coloured this and that, but this is basic stuff.

  • Automation-heavy mixing

No recording facilities necessary.Automation states need to be glancable. One day there might be a commit button here.

That is kinda the approach I'd start with.

I voted for things not currently possible as it's closest to my desire to see some heavily TCP oriented themes.

With FX Bins, better control of FXParms (inc colour coding and colour keying to envelopes), I/O sends and recieves (+their controls) available in TCP header etc.

I voted simpler themes...less eyecandy, more clarity. I know one does not exclude the other, but still.

I have been on the default-themes since 2.something. No matter what theme i try, i keep going back. They just work. Thats the most important thing.

Anyway, more layouts would be nice. Especially narrower MCP-tracks.

Default Revamp for Default theme

Reaper is such a Great DAW (Best I've Used) but I think there should be a new theme that really showcases it . To me , It feels like sacrilege making it look like it's competitors. So I would say , How about an Awesome revamp of the default theme ? Same basic setup but with nice 3D looking faders/knobs , Digital looking transport clock, shadowing . I've tried a lot of themes and all have parts that look really great but I feel that most start to take away from the Functionality of the program or cause issues with graphics . There is So much Great Talent on this Forum . I'd like to see something simple but beautiful that could be the New Default.

As for Functionality: I'd say , Start from the view point of a new user. Clean up interface and start with the 1st thing you'd want to do when you open the program, 2nd....3rd...ect. Little dumb stuff like a big button that says "NEW TRACK" can be welcoming to new users. Lets say you click it and you get a box that prompts you to enter "track name","track input","rec enable" ,ect. Or default tabs like [RECORD] , [EDIT] , [MIX] , [BURN], that are preset to create a simple fluid workflow .

Just My 2 Cents

(Much Thanks To All For Your Help And Support)

Simpler, more 'clean' themes. SUBTRACT don't ADD. You can do so much customizing in REAPER, I just want a really simple interface that doesn't get in the way, but looks nice and balanced. Not a lot of colors to separate objects - I like highlights and more of a line border vs garish colors. No 3D themes that look like 'hardware' - I don't need that type of aesthetic, it just gets in my way and wastes too many pixels (nothing against people who LOVE that type of theme, just not my bag).

See my "Project P5 Theme" http://forum.cockos.com/showthread.php?t=122435

It may not be for everyone (colors, etc) but I've always liked Project for it simplicity and colors. And I normally like dark themes...

Simpler would be more effective initially, I think.

And staying as close as possible to the default 4 theme, but clearer and a little more contrast would help[ me. MY eyesight is crap and the one thing that does give me problems is small, thinly drawn fonts on backgrounds too similar to the font colour.
Lets see CLARITY up the top of your priority list, themers.

(pleease.......)

More dark themes.

Less 3D portraiture on GUI parts that are not "control surfaces" and an emphasis on larger sizes for mouseable parts and how they're delineated.

Honestly, I would like to see finished and complete themes...
I have no interest in mockups, and that is something what we have a bit too much... Promising mockups becoming abandoned projects.

There is so much work involved, but not done to the point that the theme is actually usable. Sad..

So before asking anything new, it would be great to have actual finished and usable themes ^^

i already agreed with the more dark themes (bright themes can be an eyestrain issue for me). your other points are good too.

To me, Default Analog Theme with timlloyd's color strip mod would make the perfect theme : fantastic ergonomics, beautiful color scheme, easy on the eyes.
v4 Default Theme is almost perfect... but woud be much more appealing if not green and with few additional layouts.

Default Reaper 3 Graphics in Reaper 4

I like the Reaper 3 default graphics -- clean, functional, muted colors. Haven't found a theme for Reaper 4 that matches good old 3! Anyone know where such a theme might be hiding?
