Default MIDI 2.0 is here !

Or almost. The long awaited update to the MIDI protocol is right around the corner.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QvJhLQnuktg

Among the novelties:
- up to 256 channels instead of 16
- 32 bits of resolution for velocity instead of 7 bits
- multipolyphonic expression (MPE), for new instruments like the ROLI Seaboard
- backwards compatibility with MIDI 1.0-1.2
- individual pitch bend info/MIDI note allowing microtonal music
- compatible with web protocols

The protocol is under closed Beta right now.

Not even in beta, they are in prototyping phase. So I wouldn't say it's right around the corner. It'll take some time until it gains ground. Or it might not gain any ground at all, remains to be seen.

Yeah, I think I'll be long gone before MIDI 2.0 becomes a thing.

Probably won't even be referred to as MIDI...

I'm confident once it's published it will be used because there are quite a few hardware that are limited by the protocol right now, and even some VST.

That all depends on hardware vendors, doesn't it. Only time will tell how well adopted it gets. Well, among the companies cooperating in prototyping are Ableton, NI, Roland, Yamaha, ROLI, so there's hope. Interestingly, Korg or Sequential (Dave Smith was instrumental in creating MIDI in the first place) weren't mentioned at all.
