Default [premium script] Enable ripple edge editing

Officially announced!

Click on the picture to watch a presentation video of the script's key features!

“Enable ripple edge editing” is a paid lua script that gives Reaper the ability to ripple items when edge editing.

Script's key features :
  • support for both ripple modes (per track, all tracks)
  • two companion scripts : 1) the User Settings GUI script for easily changing settings, and 2) the Toggle Maintain Left Edge Position script for changing left edge editing behavior
  • two different behaviors when left edge resizing (behavior can be toggled at any time the user wishes)
  • support for : rippling items that crossfade, rippling while stretching items, edge resizing of multiple selected items, snapping, envelopes/automation items, markers/regions, Master Track envelopes
  • does not let any item to resize below a set length (preferred minimum length can be set)
  • makes space automatically, when items hit the project start wall while extending the left edge of an item, by moving all items to the right and keeping their relative positions
  • colors items that ripple and items that hit the project start wall (both colors can be set with or coloring can be disabled altogether)
  • respects Reaper’s settings: “Envelope points, move with media-items”, “Add edge-points when ripple editing or inserting time”, “Transition time for automatically-created envelope edge-points”

Requirements: JS_ReaScript_API, SWS installed.

The script works when editing using a mouse. Using a pen on a touchscreen is not recommended nor supported (may or may not work).

Price: 140 euros
Discounted price*: 80 euros

* The price of the script is 140 euros and if you can afford it, please, buy it at that rate. For those who can't, it is offered at a discounted price.

just out of curiosity, how does this work on crossfaded items? in other words, if i have a crossfade and go to extend the first item's tail (which is part of the crossfade), does that also ripple? i can't afford the script but this is a feature i've been wanting for a while. was told it couldn't be done. congrats on figuring it out!

thanks,
babag

Hi Amagalma

Good work, thanks. And I'm sorry to hear that this year's lockdowns have been so tough for you financially.

I would really need a version which works with Ripple All tracks, though. This Ripple Single Track version would be useful in some circumstances (eg an interview which has been recorded as a single stereo track, with nothing overlapping it), but not for a dual-mono track interview for example

For those who need both, would you be able to give an indication of the cost of the second one once it's working (assuming it's possible)? Or would it be One Script To Rule Them All (ie one that simply obeyed whichever Ripple mode is selected) in which case someone who'd already bought the first one would no longer need it...

Hope you will soon overcome the current difficulties
Best wish to you

Updated notes: (see first post)

Full-price: 60 euros*
Discounted price: 30 euros*

*: I want everyone to have access to goods and not only the richer, so I decided (as Cockos does too) to offer the script at the full and at a discounted price. If you can afford the full price, please do get it. If not, you can still get it at the discounted price.
I am going to work in implementing the Ripple all-tracks mode. I'll try to follow Sadie's editing paradigm, if possible.
Donations/fund-raising will encourage me continue working on this. Ripple all-tracks implementation will be an update of this script, so there is going to be one script which will work according to the currently selected ripple mode in Reaper.
The final/updated script will be a free update for everyone who has bought the script, either in full or at the discounted price.
People who bought it at its full-price will get it for free as soon as it is available.
People who bought it at the discounted price will get it for free as well, but when the goal of 350 euros has been reached through donations/fund-raising.

Hi Amagalma

That sounds really fair and generous, thank you.

I will happily be your first full-price customer (unless someone beat me to it!) but I can't see on your post HOW to order and pay for it. Do I just use the donations link in your sig?

Hi

I'm working on a programme today and tomorrow, so I'll try and test properly on Wednesday.

One thought initially though - similar to the idea of your Coloured Ripple Script, could there be something in this to indicate visually that this script is active and will Ripple items when the edge is moved? (eg the colour of the selected item changes?)

Thanks
Andy

@andyp24
Custom mouse cursor would be far better IMHO Item color is a precious information.

But I'm personally be fine with the ripple color toolbar :P

Do you mean a way to know that the script is enabled? If you make a toolbar button, then when the script is enabled the toolbar will be lit.

I will work on another version of the script today, and I'll send you the updated one to test on Wednesday.

Yes, I do mean a way to know the script is enabled.

For the same reason that the Coloured Ripple Script is useful (or will be once the bugs are squashed ;-) ), it's great not to have to keep looking away from the thing you're editing to check a small toolbar icon. If the script itself can change something about the item which is selected, it's intuitively easier and quicker to work, as the information is right in front of where you're looking all the time.

EDIT - just seen X-Raym's response above, and I think his suggestion is better for this one. A Custom Mouse cursor when you move it over the edge of an item if this script is running would be better than changing the item colour.

Thanks
Andy

I have changed the behavior of the script. I think the updated behavior is far superior and potent than the old one.
Plus, the script is really light! I don't think that any other optimization could be made!

Thanks!

Towards the end of the gif I show one case where I haven't decided what behavior to implement.

Does anyone have any idea?

This is really awesome and hyper-bleeding-edge-stuff.

We should "advertise"(for lack of a better word) this script in the general forums as well, as this is too helpful for many ppl.

In the case stated above, I decided this is the best behavior:

Ripple per-track is 100% ready and optimized, and ripple-all-tracks mode will be soon ready too.

Oh shit!..

Hmm.. I am afraid that handling this will considerably slow down the script so it won't look good while dragging.. But I may be wrong.. Will know after I have tried..

Is this what should happen?

Before:

After dragging right edge:

And it should move ALL envelopes, either visible or not, right?

I suppose that if the point is at edge, it should be moved rather than duplicated (imagine it is a volume automation to fade out, it is duplicate, you will have silence for the extended section).

All envelope yeah like the default ripple editing function (I didnt check).

I understand it is less good for performance, though you can have this mod just if envelope automation follows items is active.
Envelope support expected behavior as if you extend an item on a track which already have lots of edit, taking care of automation is expected.

Though I'm sure there will be some edge cases we have think about yet :P

You have opened a can of worms !

In a worst case, our at least as first implemntation, don't envelope as live time preview. Envelope points can be recreated at mouse release.

Yes, I thought about that.. but live previewing is so much sexier! :P .. Well, I have decided to go the sexy way and if there will be performance issues I'll change the behavior

This looks good to me !
Check Behavior on automation items. It may be a bit trickier. I would expected the item to be stretch if it start inside item.

Sure ! But don't worry we will have new requirements coming little by little, I think this project will keep you awake for some time :P

(like the all tracks version with markers, region support, maybe a Stretch version, why not support for reaper locked item preferences... this for another time :P)

I can only highly recommend to support amagalma. He is a very valuable member of the scripting community and in these hard times we should stick together and show some appreciation for the ones who shared all their knowledge for free all these years to make working with REAPER easier.

Absolutely.

I've already bought this script from Amagalma and will be testing thoroughly tomorrow for how it behaves with my setup/workflows.

Can't wait to see how progress with the Holy Grail of Ripple All Tracks goes :-)

Please all support Amagalma's great work on this by purchasing if you think it'll help what you do in Reaper.

And I think I'm happy with the behaviour in the video above for what to do with the automation point at the edges.

But any automation points elsewhere in the item should stay in sync with the audio they "belong to" before the edge move, so only edge points should ever move.

ENd if item left edge when right, then it should also delete points so that none goes before the item.

Both items edges and both move direction have to been taken into account :P

Thank you X-Raym! Let me put it this way. The scripting community is enormously important for REAPER. And I basically only code what I need for my own work. As a side effect, I release it to the public.
I'm extremely thankful for what you girls and guys do to improve REAPER.

X-Raym, your videos got me started with coding
amagalma, I use your threads (code and findings) every day, when coding
cfillion, OMG, thank you for ReaPack and all the other scripts
FeedTheCat, I only say: MIDI Editor Magic
HeDa: goodness, REAPER without TI or TT? Impossible to me
Julian Sader: his MIDI scripts are indispensable, not to mention JS API and all the help he provided me here
lb0: Stripper, Smart Knobs and all his advice on my scripts, can't thank him enough
Mespo: a true wizardess and function collector! :P
nofish: 1/3 of SWS, if I'm not mistaken and such a nice and helpful guy
Sexan: crazy voodoo magic scripts pushing the boundaries of what's possible in REAPER, thank you!
Tack: Reaticulate, the best articulation management on earth, period

What you all have in common is: you share your knowledge and try to help where you can (I surely missed some, bear with me).
THIS is what makes the REAPER community what it is: THANK YOU! ❤

Default Envelope support

Envelope support:
  • "Options: Move envelope points with media items and razor edits"
  • "Options: Add edge points when ripple editing or inserting time"
  • Preferences' setting for "Transition time for automatically created envelope edge points"
are taken into account.

Various other optimizations and improvements too..

Automation Item support will come soon.

Envelope movement is done after mouse button has been released. A tooltip displays information about the above 2 options so that the user can quickly know if they are enabled or not.

@amalgama
What a great enhancement !
Nice you handle so much user settings.

What about left edge support also ?

side question : snapong is suported right ? (at least snapping to grid, not sure the api can provide more snapping parameter without having to write evrything).

amagalma, I use your threads (code and findings) every day, when coding
cfillion, OMG, thank you for ReaPack and all the other scripts

Thank you for the kind words, Stevie!

There are so many nice people and so many good scripters in this community! One of Reaper's many strengths is its great community actually!
