Default >> v4: Media Item Properties dialog

The Media Item Properties dialog is now modeless, meaning it stays open while you work, and follows the set of selected items.

There are no longer separate dialogs for setting properties in single media items vs multiple selected items. If multiple media items are selected, the dialog displays only properties that the items have in common. Any property that you set or change will be set for all selected media items.

The pitch and playrate adjustment fields accept simple operations, such as “x2” or “+2”. The operation is applied to all selected media items, even if the current values are not all the same (and therefore not displayed in the dialog). For example, “x2” will double the playrate for all items.

The window can also be resized to different widths, or docked.

Here are some suggestions to improve usability of Item properties and other modeless windows.

1. Modeless windows like Item properties and MIDI filter are "stealing" window focus from the main window (arrange or midi editor). This is really annoying. Please, change this so that focus stays always in the main window unless user is entering text or numberical values to modeless window.

2. Enter should work as "apply" when Item properties is docked.

3. Is it possible to have some kind of "auto apply" for drop-down lists, checkboxes and fade types etc.?

4. "Nudge/Set..." should be also docked if Item properties is docked.

5. Is there any plan to add new docking areas to left/right/top edge of arrange view? For example docked Item properties would be handy in the right side. Then you could also see mixer at the same time in the bottom edge docker. Please, consider also adding docking areas to MIDI editor window.

Please no! That would mean that the window couldn't be closed with esc or enter until the focus is taken manually.

What needs to be done that all windows pass all non-overriden commands
to the main window, so that one can still close it with ESC, but also operate
transport commands for example.

If you prefer to close the item properties window with esc or enter, then you probably don't need/like the new modeless behaviour at all. Modeless window is ment to stay open while you work in other windows.
In modeless operation it is annoying that enter closes the window. Enter should work as apply command but if the window is really modeless it should stay open after enter key apply.

One solution could be that Item Properties could be closed with the same key that opens it (F2). Another possible solution is the one suggested by EricM.

Item properties also "steals" focus when it is docked. You can't use esc to close a docked window. So, there is definitely something wrong with the current window focus behaviour.

Currently when tabbing from the take name field, it gives nothing focus and pressing tab again goes to the position field.

Personally I think it would make sense for the first 'tab' to go to the pitch adjust field, then the playrate since that's (almost) the order of the controls in the interface and a somewhat logical order of importance.

95% of the time when opening the item properties, I'm wanting to adjust the pitch/playrate and this change would make it much easier when not using the mouse.

Cheers!

Any chance we could get controls for setting the item colour in the properties dialog?
