Identify chord from midi keyboard input?
I'm often trying out new chord shapes on the keyboard, and am looking for a way of identifying what chord I am playing in real time. I realise that some chord shapes may be ambiguous, but was hoping that there was something out there which handled those situations by listing the possible chord names.
I read about something called midiChordAnalyzer elsewhere on the forum, but the posts were really old and the download links no longer worked.

It would seem that a lot of chords, particularly complex ones, can be subjective. I personally wouldn't necessarily agree with what an algorithm told me depending on the material I'm playing. It really depends where you feel your root note is, which again could be subjective (there may be an 'implied' root depending on what your arrangement is like). However once you have decided what the root it, it's pretty simple from there.

Thanks for the links. I managed to download MidiChordAnalyzer but it doesn't respond to keystrokes from my midi keyboard (a Korg Microkey2). I can see and select the keyboard from the options menu, but the application doesn't respond to it.
If I open Reaper it has no problems with the midi keyboard.

It's pretty basic but the guitar vsts from acousticsamples have this capability, it displays which chord you're playing and allows you to select from different guitar voicings. You can see it in this demo https://youtu.be/SicaRw_GeY4?t=89

Thanks for that. I just had a look and it's 129 Euros - I was rather hoping for something open source or free :0(

Have you got Midi Input Set in Drivers, Midi Input on the track, Arm record and record monitor on ?

Yes it all looks OK - as per your screenshot. Armed, midi selected, record monitoring on, MidiChordAnalyser FX selected (see attached)

I use the chord analyzer from Insert Piz Here: https://www.kvraudio.com/product/mid...nsert-piz-here
It might be a bit harder to find these days since the URL has been suspended, but take a bit of time and you should find it somewhere, it's GPL.
That being said, a chord analyzer isn't anything but a practice tool and ultimately you definitely want to learn the basics of basics of how to recognize chords.
The rules for recognizing chords are ultimately really simple, and it'll help you tremendously really not to rely on technology too much in that regard.
If you're completely unable to get the plugin, reply here and I'll see if I can upload it to my Gdrive or something.

Yes that's the one that I have installed. Can't get it to respond to input from my midi keyboard

So it's not working on other Virtual Instruments ? no midi coming from the keyboard ? Is there a setting on the keyboard ?
You can also try with SaviHost just rename savihost.exe to midiChordAnalyzer.exe and have it with midiChordAnalyzer.dll

No I've just tried using the virtual midi keyboard with it, and it doesn't recognise that either.

With the Korg microKey 21 it says you don't need a driver but I see there is one.
Are you on Mac or Win ? as there is Ackord https://sourceforge.net/projects/ackord/

Yes I have the Korg midi driver installed - I'm running Windows 10. The Ackord app does recognise midi input from the keyboard, but doesn't output any audio so is not ideal. It also only recognises basic major and minor chords (no major/dominant sevenths, for example).

You can add any chords to the Ackord in the txt file and it does have Midi Out to send to the Windows Midi device or a virtual instrument.
But the midiChordAnalyser should work.
The ReaTrak one has over 200 chord types it will recognize:
