Default Volume Envelopes and Track Automation

I'm trying to figure out how I should be doing this. Should I just leave the track faders at zero and just use volume envelope manipulation or track automation?

Are volume envelope and track automation the same? I'd rather use volume envelopes and manipulate the points per track rather than track automation. I'm assuming track automation is better for when you have a control console Like Mackie or Behringer hooked up to the PC. But in any case is it better to just leave the track fader at Zero and work the envelopes or automation?

Envelopes and automation are essentially the same.

There are three track faders - the normal "trim" one, and the pre and post FX faders you can automate. The trim fader cannot be automated.

Pre and Post FX faders. I'm not grasping that concept. What does that mean and why would I want to use pre and post fx faders?

I'm a DIY type of guy, never went to school for this stuff.
