Default Where do I take Reaper and Ubuntu Studio from here?

Hello
After using Windows since 1995 I went 100% Ubuntu Studio in October, 2019. I won't repeat the disgust with Windows 10 that people have already articulated here; I share it.

I have licenses for Renoise and Reaper. But my Reaper license seems to have expired so I am using the temporary license that Cockos has kindly offered users until July 2, 2020. I am an experienced Linux user of 10 years of dual booting it until I ditched Windows for good. But Reaper, Ubuntu Studio and Linux audio are new to me; I used FL Studio in Windows 7.

I had no difficulties installing Reaper 6.10; it took me about 30 seconds to extract the tarball and run the sh script and choose the terminal options. Right now I have Reaper open. I used Reaper a little bit to make music in Windows 7. I have pulse audio set and I get sound; I import a wave file and it plays fine. I have also inserted some tracks, added FX and made some notes that are visible in the track. Then I looked at the OOTB instruments: rea samplomatic 5000 seems to create some note sounds.

OK. That is first base. I have it installed. I have sound with Pulse Audio. But clearly I want to make music. I have no idea how to do more. I have gone to the Reaper for Linux documentation page. I am not sure what SWS and Reapack are. But I have bigger issues for now. I have seen them both talked about here. I would like to:

[1] use my Ubuntu Studio tools in Reaper. For instance Hydrogen drums.
[2] Add any free/opensource synths, piano etc into Reaper for me to use.

Right now I can't see any obvious way to do [1]. In Windows 7 FL Studio auto searched for VSTs. I don't know what Reaper does in any equivalent way. Setting a path to where you have new instruments?

My workflow has always been to do it all in the box; I don't use a midi keyboard. I have a small Arturia Minilab but I don't often use it and I don't expect it to work on Linux. I often make music in Musescore and import the score as midi and put in the instruments.

I want to like Reaper.

Thank you

Hi,

first of all.... welcome!
1. are you aware that almost all windows plugins can be used in linux?
2. what is your soundcard? Is Linux supported? what are the auido drivers that used with Reaper?
3. why do you still use Hydrogen? are you aware that in the midi items of Reaper is present the "drum" visualization?
4. yes, is possible to mange your VST folder

all the ways you used to work in Windows are present in Linux. there are many Linux users much better than me. If only I can help you with something, willingly

cheers

Lots of details and videos, google

linux reaper youtube

and view those videos 2018 and newer.

Then search:

linux reaper "linvst" youtube

and

linux reaper "wineasio" youtube

...then search without youtube, for more text based guidance.

Visit the LinVst (plugin wrapper) website, and save the how-2 texts.

As Codesound says, quite an aray of free and commercial plugins
will work in Reaper, linux version with wrapped windows plugins,
and win-version via wine-staging.

kxstudio repository is easy to add to synaptic package manager,
valuable modern software, and the repo maintainer also now maintains
both jackd and wineasio,
which will help keep things working together well.

This webpage will help with general audio connectivity:

https://libremusicproduction.com/art...g-started-jack

Welcome, and buy lots of popcorn!

Why Windows VSTs? Was that the question? I would start with the basics first. There are plenty of Linux VSTs with one can begin with.

Linux VSTs are typically located in your home directory in invisible folders like
~/.vst, ~/.vst3 or ~/.lv2 or in /usr/lib/vst, /usr/lib/vst3. These paths should be set in Reaper -> Preferences -> Plugins -> VST.

Of course you have to re-scan after adding plugins.

The man has been using windows products for 25 years,
and no-doubt has some favorite plugins he is very familiar
with, which he'd like to keep using.

I think any 'spare' time may be better spent getting familiar with
the linux environment first, while using his existing music products
that are already well known.
Cheers

OK, wow, that is a lot to take in. I went to YouTube and found a video by Demonic Sweaters called "LADSPAs, LV2s and Windows VSTs in Reaper Linux Native Using Carla".

I followed his instructions varying slightly for where my Carla VST folder was. It might have been in the same place: /lib/vst
Anyway. I had to restart Reaper. Then when I added an FX I found the Carla Rack for the first time. Now I am looking at the new FX when I go add instrument in Carla Rack.

It was never my broad intent going to Linux to run my old Windows VSTs. I would like to run more Linux ones before thinking about WINE. Even though I did install the Carla WINE bridges as in the above video.

I will keep working on all this. Thanks for the help again!

There are probably enough Linux VST and JS plugins (JS plugins will work on any OS that Reaper works on) that you may not even care about running Windows VST, so that's a bonus if you can switch.

You may want to mention the plugins you currently use, and if anyone here has suggestions for replacements. For instance the compressor I prefer is in the LSP Plugin bundle: Compressor Stereo. With the right settings I can make it do just about any compressor sound I want. The CPU usage is really low too. It may not look like other plugins, but looks can be deceiving.

Here's another page you will probably want to visit:

There were a few other native Linux plugins he did too.

Hopefully this will list the threads he started announcing all of them.

Your Blockchain song is great! Just need to kidnap
a Rippingtons sax-guy for a longer version.

The link goes to 'sorry, no matches found...'

Thanks! I'd love to have a real sax on that song, but having my friend Polymod (Larry Benigno) playing synth and guitar solos was the best I could do at the time. That guy is a freeking monster player on both instruments.

I was afraid that the link might not work because I had drilled down to "find all threads started by", and then copied the link that found all his announcements.

Default Reaper going well

This has been a massive change;going from a pattern based DAW, FL Studio, to a track based DAW, Reaper, and going from Windows to Linux at the same time - that's like jumping from Earth to Pluto. I never saw any advantage from FL Studio's pattern system. It stymied my creativity. I saw things that I wanted to do with patterns. Normal things to me. But FL Studio wouldn't let me do things that I have already found easily in Reaper.

Windows was also getting frightening for security. I read articles about hackers reverse engineering AV's to get the source code. At the same time Microsoft was hell bent upon breaking security 101 by making Cortana impossible to remove. The first rule of security is that if you can't hack into what's not there.

Now with Carla Bay set up in Ubuntu Studio I have got instruments like Zyn working. The audio set up is different; in Windows 7 I used the ASIO driver. Now I am using Pulse.. Whether Pulse is what I should be using I do not know. I think that Reaper has become my main DAW and I will buy another license.

In Windows 7 I made music tracks for every kind of instrument such as piano, orchestra, ethnic, even a sitar. The only instrument that I don't know how to compose for is a guitar. I am a lot better at traditional composing as in Musescore; my mental model is a staff rather than a piano roll. In FL I would often import my midis from my scores and add in instruments.

But I don't want to run my Windows VSTs under Linux. I am aiming for a more minimal creative philosophy that doesn't get in the way. If I did bring across one effect it would be the reverb Rayspace by Quikquack. Awesome reverb especially for pianos. Not as well known as things like Valhalla.

You dont need Carla to run Zyn-Fusion. If you right click on TCP are and add virtual instrument it should be at the bottom of FX list.

There are very good reverbs for Linux out there. If you install Reapack you can add some repositories:

https://reapack.com/

https://geraintluff.github.io/jsfx/index.xml
https://github.com/Sonic-Anomaly/Son...ster/index.xml

and the is this one's: https://michaelwillis.github.io/dragonfly-reverb/

Superb reverbs

Default oh ok

So I right clicked on the green FX and got a categories drop down list; in it I went to synth and then I opened up the zynaddsubfx which is a cool instrument that reminds me of a UVI engine. I looked up the history of zyn and it seems to have been a paid product until 2017 when it went opensource and free.

So the above is the way you suggest to open up zyn without using Carla?

I have downloaded the latest Reaper manual. I have read none of it; Reaper is the easiest DAW to learn that I have ever come across.

You can still work patterns in Reaper using MegaBaby midi sequencer, it is already in your JS Plugins. Below is a video on how to use it.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jtNOJsAEjPE

If you want some nice IR Reverbs, please go to this website and download them to use with ReaVerb

https://www.logic-templates.com/big-...on-480l-reverb

If you use midi instruments, you could then use SFZ instruments which work very well in Reaper. There are ton of free ones on the web.
