Win 10
For posterity sake, I've got the Scarlett 18i8 running on Windows 10 with the current "production" (i.e. not beta) drivers and software (beta's wouldn't upload the newer firmware for whatever reason) along with Reaper 5.01.
I did have to "trick" Windows to use the Focusrite driver by telling it to "rollback" the driver and manually specify the correct driver.
Tascam US800 also "technically" works on my machine, though the crappy drivers (cobbled together for Win 7 and then promptly forgotten about, from what it looks like) didn't play well with my Ultrabook (yes, I'm looking to upgrade as soon as feasible), I had lots of weird registry and user account problems crop up that I could only trace back to the Tascam software.
(An aside, I just love that about Windows versus Linux; in Linux you can google an issue and find one solution that works, whereas in Windows you'll find a dozen solutions that don't fix your problem.)
(edit: Scarlett, not Saffire, natch)

I have a Creative Sound Blaster Z.
However, anything above 44.1/48khz will not work with WASAPI unless your input selection also supports it.
The standard Digital-In (SPDIF) Input supports various sample rates, but ANY sample rate with that input causes the playback to become garbage. Time stretched almost with the playback rate seemingly reduced to a fraction of 100% for whatever odd reason. It takes setting the sample buffer to 8192 samples just to get it playable. And it's still glitchy.
It's ASIO driver supports up to 192/24 playback and recording with a reported 2.0ms of latency. (AND the previous Digital-In issues with WASAPI dont' exist!~ /sadface)
However, output is limited to only the analog out and doesn't offer to output over SPDIF. You CAN use the sound card's CP to playback Stereo mix to SPDIF, but it's unknown whether any conversion is taking place and whether it is coming back out 1:1.
I am also using W7

The Yamaha SW1000XG needs 64bit drivers to run on Windows 7 64bit...
Are these possible to write?

Add Tascam US-16x08 with Win8.1x64 and Reaper 5.11x64.
I've been using this interface for a few months now. Very solid with <9ms RTL @ 44.1 with 64 sample buffer

Creative Audigy 2 pops and crackles
This card has issues with pops and crackles due to a hardware problem. I located the fault and its an easy fix. Search Youtube for instructions.
"Creative Audigy 2 crackles fix (it's not due to drivers)" Blue screen video guide.
It not the drivers ! Hope that helps.

question on 2i4 Win 7 x64 bit

Hi Gerry,
My setup: Toshiba dual processor C655-S5512 laptop, Win 7.1 64 bit, 4 gig RAM (soon to be 8 gig RAM), ext HD for audio, onboard Intel Graphics, USB 2.0. "ASIO for All" audio driver.
I am new to Reaper and Focusrite's 2i4. I recently recorded audio directly from an Alesis QS6.2. When I did, I did not get pops or clicks in the audio tracks, but I did get my display to flash on and off for about 1 second several times while recording and sometimes during playback. Audio seems unaffected. I was surprised it did not effect the audio. Any problems on your end with this issue?
I did set my computer to record audio on Focusrite's tweaking for audio page. I am still setting up Reaper as I dig in to the tutorial videos. I am cautiously considering Win 10...fyi
Any suggestions on this is greatly appreciated.

Good luck Steve I was possibly just unlucky with 10 and I suspect it was an NVidia Driver problem. I am still on Windows 7 and may update to 8.1 so I will be interested to see how you get on with 10.
Best regards,
Gerry

Can anyone tell me if the MOTU 8PRE USB ( http://www.musiciansfriend.com/pro-audio/motu-8pre-usb ) works with reaper on windows 8.1 without any problems and how easy is the talkback mic feature to use with the included CueMix Console software? Thanks in advance for the help.

Some sample rate control issue that turned out to be operator error ( but curiously did not occur with previous RME Multiface 1, which also functioned well )

Just in case someone struggled with the same nightmare with M-Audio Fast Track Pro I had when Windows 10 came out (Avid never provided W10 drivers, and all their versions were terrible anyway)
- the last M-Audio drivers (5.10.00.5134) work fine in Windows 10 and REAPER*. Do not install the AVID firmware update the from 1.00, it may brick the unit.
I have not tried installing them in W10, I just upgraded the OS from W7.
It's not a spectacular card, but does the job.

m-audio Delta AP192 working
Working m-audio Delta AP192 on Win10Pro 64bit, upgraded from Win7Ultimate 64bit.
I posted this a few weeks ago, mentioning it here just for information:
If you upgraded from Win7 to Win10 and use old hardware/drivers, W10 (including the Anniversary Upgrade) will work with the drivers you used.
If you do a fresh install of W10 and upgrade to Anniversary 1607, there will be some trouble with old drivers IOW they seem not to work any more.
They must be digitally signed now.
I found that on a german forum and it has a link to this MS blog thingy: https://blogs.msdn.microsoft.com/win...-version-1607/.
Here is the link to the original thread windows 10 anniversary update killed reaper
My complete post in the thread was:

Compatibility with M-Audio M-Track 2x2M ?
Hello World !
I will buy a news soundcard soon, so I ask here if someone already used this one :

(I didn't come in the reaper forum for a long time. I hope I post in the right place. Maybe It's better to creat a specific topic for me? I didn't know :/ )

SSL MX4 soundcard
I have just installed the above card, including the SSL drivers, and I can' get it to function with Reaper. The DAW recognises the card, but I get the following message: "There was an error opening the audio hardware: Error initializing ASIO buffers" On the top right hand corner of my Reaper screen it says (audio device closed).
The computer is a HP Z400 i5 quadcore running Windows 10, and I have even tried turning off the Windows Audio entirely, to no avail.
Does anyone have a clue as to what is happening? Has anyone managed to run this card succesfully with Reaper?
Kind regards,
Tavs

RME Digi 196/8 pad
Hi all,
Before I go digging into an already working situation I want to further explore my options with my setup.
Currently am working with a MacPRo 2010 running El Cap. Interface is an Apogee Duet. I downscaled my operation a few years ago so two channels is all I need currently. Have latest Reaper 64 and everything is ticking along just fine. However I had a firewire cable crap out on me on the Duet so I decided to drag out some older equipment while I wait for the new cable. (I live in a rural area).
So, what I would like to do is use my Apogee PSX 100 2 channel ADDA. Problem is there is no interface into the computer as it only has lightpipe (adat) spdif and aes digital input outputs. I like this converter, has always sounded good to me for what I do. (The Duet is just convenient because I can work on projects on my laptop anywhere and has a couple decent pre's that I can get by with if I ever needed them.) I also have an RME Digi 196/8 card that I pulled out of a pc that has been sitting around gathering dust. It has all the input/outputs I need
So, 2 questions: One, will it work in the mac (first year of intel I believe) and secondly will Reaper support it. I don't want to mess around too much until I finish a project, but ideally I would rather use the PSX100 as my adda. This is also my first project done completely in REaper, and I have to say I am so pleased with this software. So very intuitive (expect trimming overall levels on automation) What a great DAW. Will never go back to the others I have used...PT, Cuebendo etc.....

First off, your Mac Pro definitely has Toslink audio in and out. I'm not sure on what kind of connector though. If you're lucky, it's a standard Toslink connector. If not, you'd still need Apple's wonky Toslink to 3,5 mm jack cable adapter.
Doesn't the Apogee have Toslink? I seem to remember it does. Could it be the ADAT port doubles as a Toslink?
The RME card will not fit unless it's a PCIe version. And I believe the RME Digi 196/8 is PCI only. You can visually check, as the PCI connector has a lot more pins than the PCIe.

Thanks for the speedy reply. I just pulled the Mac out and had another look and found toslink input and outputs. They were hidden by little doors that looked like a closed slot. When I powered the unit up I could see light emitting from the closed flap of the output. Sweet! This makes it easy. As far as the RME card, you are correct as well...it's a pci version. Anybody want or need one?
Thanks again for your help.

Hey, that's still a very useful card.
Make someone happy. Not me, tho. I already have a FF400 and no computer with PCI slots either. And I'm happy already

Happy to help someone, especially someone who is broke. This will only gather dust. Being in Australia shipping might be a few bucks, but worth it.
Not having any luck getting the psx to sync with Reaper, and I am not sure if it's Reaper or the Mac. I have gone into audio devices where is shows the built in inputs/outputs, and the Duet. I have tried using the built in devices but there is no recognition....The psx shows that it is locked and there are no errors, however I have no luck getting a signal out. Strangely, whenever I try to change the sample rate to 48 (which my project is set to) the digital input keeps going back to 44.1. The output will stay at 48. Looking at the meters on the psx with no signal coming out shows a fully lit right channel, and on the left side channel a three of the ten lights on the meters are lit? I can't find any info on the legacy support except the manual which is not telling me much. I can confirm that the Mac is sending light through the pipe into the psx. This project is on a stall right now trying to troubleshoot....
So, since there is no driver download I can't interface directly from the psx to the mac, unlike the Duet which is does all that.

Not completely broke but to broke to afford going to a NEW card that will do more than the 48 limit I have right now AND is pci - Postage from Oz to UK cant be that expensive, hopefully.

Happy to help out....just going to gather dust otherwise. I would rather help someone make music then just have it sit around.
I had a double win today, worked out that the Duet firewire output had a bent connector so I it was an easy fix.
Did more reading and have managed to get my trusty PSX 100 working with Reaper. All good! Except the analogue signal leaving the PSX is to hot entering into a small analogue mixer I use for headphone monitoring and mini patch bay. Have to trouble shoot the whole signal chain tomorrow. For now I can celebrate that this will work without outlaying any more cash.

try a resistor?
If the signal is too hot maybe you can put a small resistor, say 5K Ohms, in line with the
input lead + side. Radio Shack has inexpensive 10K PCB mount trimmer resistors (AKA trimmer pots) you could tweak until you get the right level. Then you could leave it soldered-in or measure with an ohmmeter and replace with a fixed value resistor. R/S also has packs of small wattage resistors pretty cheap. I would not expect you to need more than a half watt resistor but using one with a larger power rating would not hurt. A 1/4 watt might work as well.
This might also help signal to noise ratio, effectively swamping hiss and maybe even A/C hum.

Could the PSX be in ADAT mode?
The Mac only does SP/DIF. Unfortunately, I don't know the PSX, so I'm guessing. Any DIP switches on the back, perhaps?

Yup, as soon as I switched it to the Sp/dif it locked. One more little trouble shoot today and should have it sorted.

Still struggling a little here. I can send a sine wave into the left channel of an armed track and I have signal present. But when I move to the right output of the AD it won't show any signal in Reaper. It does however show on the PSW so I know the channel is working. Output shows equal signal in the DA conversion so that side of things is okay. Is there something in Reaper that I am missing? Also, where can I set my nominal input gain into Reaper as the signals come in a little hot for my taste. I would rather drive the analogue stage harder and have the signal come in at around -18. Any help on this would be awesome. Meanwhile I will keep fiddling around

dumb sound card question
I am just starting to re purpose an old gaming computer to run Reaper and record my drums at home (recording newbie). I plan on buying a Tascam US 8X16 usb interface so I can run 8 mics at a time.
My question is for editing. Would I leave my headphones plugged into the Tascam and Reaper would send a quality signal to it for high quality listening / editing?
Or should I be buying an hardware soundcard like the ones mentioned here and plug into it for editing on reaper.
I know I could answer this once I got everything hooked up but I wanted to know if I need to by a card while re building this computer.
Thanks.

You are awesome with that.
It's got on board DSP so you can take EQ and Compression to track if u want
...or maybe it comes with VST's u can insert or buss IDK but,
it does say that it has virtually latency-free monitoring...just what
a beginning engineer slash experienced drummer would hope for.
You may have to switch the track recording monitor off, as u may not need it, that is,
if the Tascam has hardware monitoring, which, it does not
state clearly, it just says 'Virtually latency free' which I am taking to
mean 'NOT hardware monitoring', and of course, if it did, there would probably be a
mix or a monitor/pc adjustment knob, and there is not.
There is a line 1-2 out knob, but that is it's on-board line out for running
monitors or recording to another device. So, I guess you may need REAPER's
software recording monitor anyway, well, that is, if you are playing along
with a metronome or other instruments that have already been tracked.
All in all I think that is a nice unit for the money, and I am sure
any monitoring latency that could be produced, even under a heavy mix strain,
will not be enough to justify passing up that deal in favor of something with
hardware monitoring.
Sorry if I teched u to death, I think u are looking at the right piece.
And your headphones would plug right into the unit. You could use cue or send outs
in REAPER to tailor the signal to the Tascam, then use the knob on the right side of
it to control your listening volume, and it would be amazing for mixing if indeed
it will allow REAPER to take advantage of it's DSP by way of VST Plugins.

Wow great forum. First post and got an answer I can use now and when I get everything set up. Thanks for the info. The more technical the better for me, I'm sure I'll be back here reading this a few times more once I have all my gear.
I'm a bit older now and still play drums but am not currently in a band. I just wanted to go back and put down some of the songs that never made it to recordings because of band breakups and studio time / money. I plan on getting the drum tracks put down, mixed nice, and then track down my old band mates to get them to add their parts (I'm still friends with most of them and I'll just make the other ones do it lol).
Thanks again,
J

The level of quality in an audio interface isn't tied to the connection format. eg. A pci card connecting interface isn't automatically better than a USB connecting interface.
PCI card, firewire, thunderbolt, & USB interfaces all come in OK/better/best quality. It's more about choosing the I/O you need, the level of quality of the analog stages (input preamps and AD/DA converters), and the bottom line latency of the hardware (if you are planning on live sound use).
