Default Good Heavy Guitar Sound

I've been trying and trying to establish a good punchy/heavy guitar sound. I don't know if anyone listens to any bands like Miss May I or Asking Alexandria. But i have tried anything from recording with high gain, low gain, a clean sound and then adding effects and i just cannot seem to get the sound that im truely looking for. Are there any tips to help me get to this sound. If you would like an example of the sound look up on youtube "Apologies For the Week" by Miss May I. Any and all help is greatly appreciated.

thanks,

Derek

You need a twin coil guitar like a Les Paul.

The sound is an amp cranked up so you won't get it with distortion or overdrive pedals, but either a real amp cranked and mic'd up with an SM57 or a guitar emulation using a Marshall Head and a 4x12 cab setting.

After you have tracked it then add a serious amount of compression to flatten it out.

And always, *always* double-track or quad-track your guitars.

False information - only do this if you want them to sound double or quad tracked. This a stylized thing, you can get plenty good heavy guitar sounds without doing so. "Heavy guitar" means different things to different people you know

Like stratotak says - what are you doing that isn't working, what sound do you want, and are you using real amps or sims?

well i am using a v-amp module. its truely a bass module as dumb as it sounds but it produces a better sound to record straight into my computer and into reaper. but its not the quality that im searching for. like i said about the miss may i sound. its incredible. and i dont know for sure what to do. and the guitar i use for myself is an Ibanez Les Paul edition. its really old from before ibanez got sued for trying to remake the les paul.

an old Ibanez Les Paul has lovely pickups, I owned a Gold top, and a White Custom one and they are superb.

I also had a V-amp, they are pretty woolly if you ask me

I suggest you follow this link

A fair point, since obviously Van Halen's old stuff just had the one track, but it's been ages since I heard anyone ask about getting a heavy tone and not give examples that are fairly modern, Pro Toolsy, etc.

Most metal albums today considt of the following:
Heavy gauge strings
Downtuned
High output pickups (usually EMG's)
Mahogany bodied guitars
Tubescreamer
High gain amps (usually 5150 or Mesa Rectifier's)
4 x 12 cabinets loaded with celestion V-30's
Mic'd on axis with an SM-57
Quad tracked
And also a solid Bass Guitar tone... A good bass tone makes all the difference.

I've always wondered though......how to mix/eq all of those guitars....always sounds crappy when I do it even IF the parts are kosher.

You have to play really accurately, and then be heavy-handed with your HPF and low-mid eq. Don't set doubles to the same pan position either. Spread the image of the instrument out a little, it will sound beefier that way, but make sure to HPF more as you pan further from the centre.

Go to the Sneap forums sign up and search, search, search.
Most of the guys there get absolutely stellar tones.

Joey Sturgis, who produced those bands, uses Line 6 POD Farm for all the guitars. It is all about the presets, and mixing to taste. He lives in the same town I do, and he is floating around this board somewhere. Mostly, he uses the Bogner Uberschall model, as well as Cali Tread/diamondplate, with mesa 4x12 cabs, mic'd with a condenser mic, rather than an SM57. He adds a little bit of C4... boost at 300 to 400 hz, cut at 4k, boost 5-8k for clarity, etc.

It is all about experimentation.
