Evening all,
Today's new video for Reaper shows you how to assign FX Parameters to your tracks and then link them to a control surface (you can ignore this step if you don't use one).
Reaper Tutorial: User Assigned FX Parameters
Learn how to assign individual FX Parameters to their tracks and control them via either the mouse or through your control surface via MIDI Learn in Cockos Reaper.
A great way of accessing your most used parameters on a track without having to rely on going back to the actual FX / VSTi interface.
This method helps streamline and speed up your workflow as well as allowing you to customise the Track Control Panel to your own preferences.

I watched your very interesting video's about gainstaging. So I immediately made a base FX chain for each new track with this plugin. I installed the parameter Max Volume at -18 db as you told. But here's the problem: when I insert a wave file in to the track, the music sounds terribly distorted like as if I added a limiter with stupid values. I tried both versions of Reaper that I have: one installed v4.78 and one portable v5.01. Both had the same problem of completely distorted sounds.
What can I possibly have done wrong?
Hope you can advise me what to do.
Thank you!

Hi Paul99,
I'm not sure why you're getting distorted tracks when using WAV files with the volume control. I'll have a look when I get back later and do some tests to see if I can replicate the issue you're experiencing :0)

Are you using the Max Volume or Adjustment setting?
I tend to find that using the Max Volume can cause some nasty distortion, whereas the Adjustment is much smoother.

I thought I understood from your video that it was the smartest and easiest to use the Max Volume because each track would have a different volume. So adjustment must be done for each track and with Max Vol = -18 db it would be the most convenient way? So I guess then it must be done track by track? Or is there an other plugin that does the trick?

Looking into your problem a little deeper it would appear that using the max volume alone to reduce too much of the track level will result in an 'overloading' and this can cause distortion if pushed too hard.
What I find is that a mix of max volume to reduce the overall amount by a given amount (until you hear it distort) then add in the additional adjustment using the Adjustment slider.
So, for example, if you can use the Max Volume to get to -14db before breakup, you can add in the additional -4 db via the Adjustment slider and you should suffer no additional distortion.
Quirky, but this seems to be the way that the JS Volume plug-in works.

Yeah, that is quite strange isn't it? It's a Volume plugin that acts as if it is a distorted limiter. A Volume plugin disguised as distortion.....quite early this year for Halloween...;-)
Anyway thanks for helping me clarify this and keep up the good work with your video's!

I agree, it is a bit of an odd one. Maybe it's emulating an analogue effect that breaks up under heavy usage.
