I think the idea is to use them as 'reference' speakers. Meaning that after or during a mix you listen to how it sounds on the reference speakers as.... a reference. But I hardly see it useful to actually mix on those.
The other thing about good monitoring (meaning both the monitors AND the room around them) is that it makes it easier to create a mix that translate well to other systems. So, at least in theory, you can listen to other speakers/rooms to check if your mix indeed does translate well. But with a good monitoring situation to mix on, that check should mainly tell you that you indeed have a good monitoring situation to mix on
If listening on other reference systems tends to bring you back to the mixing stage for whatever is lacking on those reference systems, basically your mix-monitoring setup is fubar
