IRs are audio files because have an audio format extension, but don't confuse them with regular audio files. They are a complete different thing.

I just applied FX, sends, returns, turn off some master sends to send for a bus and used BC Free Amp, so no IRs, right?

After several listens I still think I am not understanding the lyrics.

Does this seem right?

Rough hands moving. I keep a ball!
Wilming in raggedy,
But I’m becoming a goose.
.....
I never said I was a good man
I never told you I was feeling up to "Heathen Choy"
.....
But if I had the bought of gas, in a lie, I would
Run out n’ stand, for the road bad or rough
.....
My body’s toilet putty (I hope not that jelly stuff you seal toilet drains with...)
My arm can fly true
.....
If I gave a noun
Be feely, and
For the people burned alive, for the slut and the penis' friend (often the same thing, no? ;p)

Every year there has been a different user that kept winning and winning. I thought maybe this year was different, but NOPE! Because one user has just won the contest for the 3rd time in a row (December, February, March), and I think you already know who I'm talking about... This person is...

AFTERCUTRECORDS!

Congrats man! Haha
Now go choose a kickass song because April has no restriction over the plugins! Send me a PM by April 3rd with the song.

OK, this time a clear favourite for me (4) but for 2nd and 3rd place I had to struggle because I think that no remaining mix shines notably. Of course, all my opinions are just opinions.

1) Not too bad, bass present but not invasive. Snare a little too muffled, and the reverb on it doesn't help. Hihat and crash too loud. Nice touch the reverse cymbal at 3:44.

2) Too much midrange, voices squashed to the center of the stereo field, sometimes submerged by other instruments.

3) The sound seems to come from a single, little loudspeaker in the center of the stereo field. The mixer opted to isolate a single voice track, but I don't think that it was a good idea. Too much reverb on the drums that seems to be in another place compared to the other instruments.

4) My favourite by far. Excellent tonal balance, the sound is punchy but clear, as it should be. My only tiny remark (just to show my envy...) is that maybe there is too much hi-end on the toms and especially on the vocals that seem a little bit too harsh. (Damn, I'll have to download the Reaper project to steal some tricks from this guy...)

5) Here the bass is preminent, this gives the mix a nice punchy feel, but unfortunately tends to eat up the details from the other instruments. Isolated vocal track. The sound of the snare reminds me sometimes the cardboard box that me and my band mates as kids used when we couldn't afford real drums.

6) Not too bad. Muffled drums. In the "quiet" part, in my opinion, the guitars are too loud, and doing so you lose the contrast with the other parts of the song.

7) My mix.

I ended to vote 4-1-6. Cheers to all and please: for the april contest not another metal song...

With my points I guess I’m not in position to give comments, but here’s my quick remarks anyhow. For some reason I listened only a part of the intro and 10 seconds of vox. So if there were genious moves in other parts of the mix, I didn’t hear them.

1 ++
Nice glued overall sound
dark drums gives space to cymbals. But are they too separate?
Good vox sound
Guitar could be a bit more distinquishable
Distortion of the bass maybe too loud

2-
My lousy mix

3
Suffocated drums
Mix lacks separation
Foggy vox

4 +++
Nice separation
Maybe a bit too sharp voice.
Kick feels a bit thin

5
Snare sounds a little cheap
Vox quite sharp, but still ok

6
A little powerless groove,
Guitar maybe dominates too much
Solo guitar suffocated

7+
Groove maybe too dominated by kick, otherwise great
Vox maybe too far, but in this case it may be a good thing
I wonder if the piano has too strong role
Cymbals quite low, but I’m not sure if that’s bad at all.

My votes: 4,1,7

Feedback (note: just my opinions)
--------------------------------

#1
My mix. My own partial critique: I did well with the vocal sound, which I think is the best among the mixes. I did less well when it came to the guitars, which are not well defined and not aggressive enough. I think I over-did the multiband compression a tad in the mastering. Too much cymbals and hi-hat ruins my chance of a higher grade.

#2
Brutal guitar sound – love it! But the mix sounds over-compressed and a bit distorted. Poor vocal sound.

#3
Too much keyboards, both in the intro and in the choruses (piano), which makes it sound less aggressive and less metal, I guess. Vocals sound a bit whiney. Too much reverb on the snare.

#4
I am clearly in the minority here, but I think that there were too many issues with this mix to warrant a high grade (sorry):
* Weak, thin vocal sound with way too harsh sibilants. Need to be de-essed.
* The backing vocals “gooood maaaaan” are too muddy/muffled and get lost in the mix.
* Kick has way too much “click” (high mids) for my taste
* Snare sounds very “non-metal” (more like techno?): too dry, weird sound, lacks punch and aggressiveness.
* Guitar solo buried

Apart from these issues, I agree the overall audio image is professional, with superb clarity and balance. Nicely pitch-corrected vocals.

#5
A bit hard to hear and distinguish the individual instruments. Poor vocal sound with way too harsh sibilants. Too much piano in the chorus. A bit of a cardboard sound on the snare.

#6
I like the short delay on the vocals, even though it’s a bit too much at times. Otherwise good vocal sound. The growl is perfect. The mix lacks a bit high end overall. Otherwise nice mix.

#7
I lack aggression overall, the mix sounds a bit “too nice” or too little metal. The vocals are sometimes hard to hear clearly, and they have too harsh sibilants. Sounds weird with vocals only in the left channel sometimes.

True. Metal is maybe the only musical genre that I don't like at all. I never listen it. I even had to ask a friend to point me to some songs for reference. But inevitably my mixing choices are more oriented towards balance, clarity and intelligibility more than aggressiveness and punch. So maybe my mix is more indie than metal? It's difficult to work on materials you don't like.

Ok, my turn:
ID 1 - Full mix in sonority, elevated sound with cymbals sounding at the correct level mainly, pleasant vocals, but when the chorus appears one of the guitars are suffocated, I dislike that, snare ok, good mix;

ID 2 - The first thing I thought was about the guitar that shines more, it's a little exaggerated, great kick level, amazing cymbal level and piano a little high. Scream part not in the correct tempo, after the scream part I like the vocals, the part the guy sings calmly is very quiet;

ID 3 - The same for the first critique about the guitar shinning so much, but more attenuated (dark sound) and I perceived more strings, buried guitars but it's the style of the mixing and I like the level of the piano, out about the tempo in the scream part, after this part very good!!!;

ID 4 - Wow! I love this mix, guitars very pleasant, great vocals, great kick, all very balanced and fit the genre in my opinion, but I didn't noticed the piano in the chorus part, I dislike it, 1:14 - 1:21 wow again, the vocals and reverb dancing in harmony, this mix rules.

My mix - I consider I did a decent job, but cymbals was a little exaggerated, vocals a little distorted and some parts I would turn up the vocals if I did again the mix, piano I think it's really a little exaggerated, but a little, I could put more pressure about the side guitars it was a fault, but I consider I did a good job, about the snare I like this sound, for me it has impact so it's more proeminent being possible to clearly listen to the snare, I really think there are great mixes and not great mixes (NOT about the contest), but also there are styles, sometimes a person mixes more outside, more inside, just my opinion. I would do the most part again if I had to mix again, but changing the errors sure.;

ID 6 - A mix with space, I believe was used tape? I like it, after the first words the guitars are amazing, chorus amazing, scream part is the best scream part I heard, the piano in the part after the scream is amazing, the part the guy sings "I still believe..." is quiet, after I like again the piano, but the vocal sounds a bit distorted, harsh, detail, I like the mix;

ID 7 - Interesting the piano sound, but too much, the guitar and the rest ok, a little exaggerated in reverb, but it can be a different way to mix, not necessarily bad, the kick is good, the darkest mix, I believe it needed more space in sonority, more FX (I include tape in FX), but not bad, just not my style, out of tempo about the scream part, great level about piano after the scream part and great level for the vocals, great part the quietest part.

It's just my opinion, detail, all the mixes, ALL, have interesting parts and all of us are great mixing, my opinion, if I didn't say "I like" about your mix, doesn't mean it's bad, and I really believe in styles while mixing, like mastering has too.

Cheers and thanks for the opportunity to be part of this contest with so much good people mixing.

Ah! Congrats to the winner!

A question for DaveKeehl: in the submissions page, are you using the flacs sent by participants or have you re-rendered the projects? Because I seem to hear some little differences.

Yes, I check the loudness of all the entries and normalize them all to -14 LUFS as Spotify and other streaming services would do. Obviously, if a mix is very loud or very quiet then yes, you would hear differences.

You can see from the following image by how much each mix has been turned up or down.

Thanks, but there's something I don't understand. According to your graphs, my mix was turned down only by 0.01db. But when I compare the two rendered projects, the mix on the page seems lower by -1db. I've attached the Youlean Meters of the two flacs:

FYI, I tested the aftercutrecords mix also, and according to Youlean Loudness Meter it seems to be normalized at -15 LUFS, too.

yeah I put a limiter on all the tracks with the ceiling set to -1dB. It's the closest thing I can do to mimic the loudness normalization process. This way you're only penalized if your master doesn't match with the specified requirements on the website (integrated loudness of -14 LUFS, peaks at -1dB).
