Optimizing large track templates
Hi!
I'm building a track template for orchestral scoring and I'm using alot of tracks. All tracks have inactive FX and are muted, so I can activate whatever I like with a keybind later. However, CPU is going nuts at this high track count.
When scrolling around with the hand tool in the template I get around 40% CPU usage, and it increases the more tracks I add. It doesn't matter if the tracks are hidden or visible in TCP, still the same CPU spike. When tabbed out of Reaper it's nice and steady at around 3% idle CPU usage.
Is there a way to optimize Reaper to work better with large track templates?
Thanks

you will always be limited by the overall power of your computer... right?
more powerful machines can handle more, and less powerful, ..well less...
have you tried not just making the FX inactive but setting them Offline?
What are the FX used? And how are they used?
Also, try to set the tracks so the record is NOT armed
bring up the performance meter and watch the changes

Track Template Issue
I know this thread is over a year old but I am having the SAME issue.
--A large track template with multitimbral instruments (mostly Kontakt 6)
--Press play even when there is no MIDI or audio in any track (even with tracks offline and FX disabled.
--CPU goes nuts
Also when I record MIDI it clogs and slows down.
I really would like a big template as I write in tons of styles--but I don't utilize all of these tracks for every project. I just want them to be available.
And muting tracks seems to help. Sometimes hiding them in the TCP as well. Help!

Optimizing large track templates
my $0.02
To save processing power, don't try and put together one big 'kitchen sink' template.
Instead, make templates for 'sections' and categories, i.e. String orchestra, brass, percussion, separately.
Then, write each section as you add it to your project, freezing as you go.
You can always un-freeze a section or two for tweaking later.

Great suggestion! Now I’m wondering if Reaper will let you insert a project as a track, or link an empty track to a project. That might be a great way to handle hundreds of tracks with orchestration buy simply adjusting each project tab to basically create stems
