Default Unexplained silence.

Hello-
I'm using Reaper with a Focusrite Scarlett 18i20.
Yesterday I was adding a couple of mic tracks to an existing project- not a CPU-strainer- and when I played the project back there was silence. Reaper was visibly running through the project but I had no sound. All the elements of playback were set correctly.
I closed the project, turned off the Focusrite, rebooted , turned the Focusrite back on, re-opened the project and all was fine- except I had an unexplained problem.
Anyway, later in the day when the project was completed I was listening to the playback and near the end of the project the sound cut out again. Reaper was still running. I closed Reaper down, reopened it, played the project and it went silent again at around the same point.
Again I closed down everything, rebooted and the project ran OK and I was able to render it to .wav, thankfully.
Has this happened to anybody else ? I'm at a loss as to why everything was running OK but with no sound output. Studio monitors are fine, as are all connections.

If I can perhaps simplify my enquiry- what could cause the sudden absence of audio output in Reaper ?

Yes- the audio dropouts occur at different points.

I've changed the block size to 512 and it hasn't re-occurred yet- but the CPU usage never got above 26% previously.

I could understand that Reaper might seize up under adverse circumstances- but why should the audio just drop out and the program keep running ?

Make sure Reaper isnt closing down because of excessively hot signals from your tracks. Its a safety feature but a PITA if you dont know its there.

Hello Ivan- well that's the strange thing- it isn't closing down. It's running as normal except that there's no audio output.
