Default Midi Volume Envelope Fades

I just want to make sure I understand this correctly.... Previously I would add a standard track "Volume" envelope directly to a midi VSTi track and create my levels and fades. It seemed to work but the fades were not clean. My understanding is that it's really adjusting midi velocity instead of volume. Instead I went back and created a send from the midi track to a new track (with the Parent Send off) and then added a volume envelope on THAT track and made my adjustments there. In the second method the fades are clean. I suspect there are other ways to do this but is this method correct? Thanks

The best way is to just do it in the Midi Editor. Volume is usually CC7 so all you have to do is draw in the CC7 events, then use Shift-Left-Drag to create a smooth fade.

Another way is to simply fade a regular volume envelope on the VSTi output track.

Didn't know I could do a fade that way. In this case I think using the envelope works better because there are several volume changes on the track before the fade and I'm matching them with other other envelopes on other tracks. As I said I was having trouble doing a fade out on the midi track with the normal envelope. In this case (piano) I was getting a thump at the end of the midi file slightly after the fade. Extending the fade past the file fixed it but the fade was too long. I'm sure I'll use your suggestion in the future. Thanks.
