Default Input Only Monitoring

Apologies if this has been covered, but a search didn't turn up anything.

Is there a way to do 'Input Only' monitoring in Reaper?

So for example:

Let's say you create a track and lay down a guitar part. Now you want to go back and play around with some other ideas, but the existing item from the first pass continues to be heard in the monitors -- along with the input signal.

What I want to do is mute the existing item while monitoring the input signal (only.) I suppose I can accomplish this by physically muting the existing item, but this is a bit cumbersome. Feel like there has to be a better workflow. Is there?

Thanks.

I'm away from the studio right now, but surely as long as the track is record armed you won't hear existing material on playback. Or am I going mad?

... at least with simple Monitor Input selected and Record mode normal ..

Yes, you are going mad!

Joking aside, thanks for replying, but I am getting both signals at once. Perhaps there's a preference for this that I'm missing??

Make sure you don't have this enabled...

Oh dear, I think I misunderstood you. Should have read more carefully, sorry. You're not actually recording, right, only monitoring input from microphone? In that case I fear you may be right. Off my head, I can't think of a quicker way than just muting the existing items.

Which doesn't mean there isn't one ....

Thanks Adam. That works during actual recording, however I'm trying to just monitor the input (and mute the existing item) without recording anything.

Anyone else have any thoughts on the subject?

Disabling "Monitor track media when recording" won't help if you're just monitoring the signal (like playing your guitar without recording just for practice). I don't think you can do this with our current options.

Cheers

Ah. That'd be a feature that I'd love to see implemented.

Anyone who does this often have any clever workarounds to share?

Ah my mistake, didn't realize we were monitoring input on playback and not while recording! Yeah as others have said I don't think this is achievable currently. A new monitoring mode for "input only" would be helpful to have definitely!

let's see you got a trak recorded and now you don't want to hear that track but just want a live input you can hear while you DO hear other tracks?

So ummm... dupelicate that track and delete the wav file on it, set that dupe to "Record disable [input monitoring only]" ...it's one of the input options [clk the IN button at left of the meter]

mute the original trak and ...

Play away....

Actually if you choose Record: disabled (input monitoring only)
mode, arm the track and start recording, it will do what you want,
it won't record anything while technically just playing back

There is an existing feature request and a lengthy topic about
separation of record and monitoring section somewhere ...

Eric, yes, that's it!

Bit confusing and counterintuitive to have to hit record for input only monitoring, but that's exactly the functionality that I'm looking for.

Be nice if it was a simple monitoring option (instead of a recording option), but good to know that the functionality exists.

Thanks all!

I'd like to see it as a simple monitor option as well. I can think of 4 other programs where that's the default behavior of a single "Monitor" button on the Track which can be toggled Output to Input with a single programmed key.

Pulling up this old post as there's a workaround I can share (putting audio on record armed tracks offline). It's a toggle so when a track is armed you can hit a button and get DIY "input only mode":

In the cycle editor:

Save current track selection
Select only record armed tracks
Selection set: Save set #9
Item: Select all items in track
Item: Set selected media offline
Restore saved track selection
Selection set: Load set #9
------Step------
Save current track selection
Select only record armed tracks
Selection set: Save set #9
Item: Select all items in track
Item: Set selected media online
Restore saved track selection
Selection set: Load set #9

You could use a script in place of the save/load selection set part if you already use all the sets for something else.

I do this: "EricM said: Actually if you choose Record: disabled (input monitoring only)
mode, arm the track and start recording, it will do what you want,
it won't record anything while technically just playing back " which is quick and easy.

Been doing it this way for ever, so it probably seems natural because of that, though.

If you right click on the main arm button you will see a complete list of monitor functions that has a few extra options like monitor/no record. Have you looked at all those options?

So yea .,.. what ivansc said
