Sound Open Firmware 2.2 Preparing More Optimizations, More Zephyr Usage
Written by Michael Larabel in Intel on 10 June 2022 at 05:11 AM EDT. 1 Comment
INTEL -- It was just back in April that Sound Open Firmware 2.1 released as the newest version of the open-source audio DSP firmware stack started by Intel and also even being used by other select hardware vendors as well. Sound Open Firmware 2.2 is on the way as the newest feature release for Intel's "SOF" project.

Sound Open Firmware 2.2-rc1 was released yesterday as the first public milestone towards this next sound firmware feature release. With Sound Open Firmware 2.1 they began transitioning some platforms from running XTOS to instead using the Zephyr real-time OS. With Sound Open Firmware 2.2 that Zephyr RTOS adoption continues. The release notes mention that more native API integration around Zephyr continues and

by Sound Open Firmware 2.3 they hope to be "fully Zephyr native."

In addition to expanded Zephyr support, Sound Open Firmware 2.2 brings a variety of performance optimizations. There is also a new up-mix/down-mix module with support for HiFi4, improvements to the Windows code so other vendors can leverage it without modifications, IPC4 additions, and a variety of other changes.

Source downloads and more details on all of the changes so far as of the Sound Open Firmware 2.2 release candidate can be found via GitHub.

Besides Intel starting the project, under the Linux Foundation's stewardship other vendors to get involved with this open-source sound firmware include AMD, Google, MediaTek, NXP, Realtek, and others. Learn more about the initiative at SOFProject.org.

------------

For those who may be interested, here's a quick introduction:

https://thesofproject.github.io/late...ion/index.html

TL;DR

Sound Open Firmware (SOF) is an open source audio Digital Signal Processing (DSP) firmware infrastructure and SDK. SOF provides infrastructure, real-time control pieces, and audio drivers as a community project. The project is governed by the Sound Open Firmware Technical Steering Committee (TSC) that includes prominent and active developers from the community. SOF is developed in public and hosted on the github platform.

The firmware and SDK are intended for developers who are interested in audio or signal processing on modern DSPs. SOF provides a framework where audio developers can create, test, and tune the following:

* Audio processing pipelines and topologies.
* Audio processing components.
* DSP infrastructure and drivers.
* Host OS infrastructure and drivers.

Native Instruments annual 50% discounts have begun. --originally posted by Glowrak guy

https://www.native-instruments.com/e...d-07efe3e9331c

I started slowly with Native Instruments products, free Christmas plugins, inexpensive
instruments and effects, discovered I qualified for a rare discount on Kontakt, which led to a discount
on a Komplete 12 bundle. Upgraded to Komplete 13 during a similar sale.

I had to discover and implement a few workarounds involving registration and updates,
but they are easy nuisances to overcome. I can say that I use some NI product every week,
and almost every day/every session. There are many products in the full Komplete bundle,
that are unmatched by the competition.

Beyond the sale price, I think these are needed:
wine-staging
linux and windows reaper daws
wineasio
Lin-vst or yabridge
enough disk space, including 30% free contiguous diskspace AFTER the installation
willingness to stop upgrading when a point of productivity/stability has been achieved
awareness that some things may not work as well as in a mac/windows setup.

AVLinux ships with all or most of the fundamentals, to get started.

I still have not needed to install everything, as there are a hundred or so gigabytes
of sound libs I've yet to explore, and a wide range of Grand Pianos and Kontact instruments
that are not yet needed. The included instruments and effects keep me busy,
including the core group of excellent linux native instruments and effects.

Reaktor 6 and it's amazing user library, are a darkhorse, for those understanding
modularity, wanting to create things yet to be imagined, or just implement the
great work of the community.

There is a free 30 day trial of 'Komplete Now', to verify things can be made to work,
and if happy, can be rented for $10 thereafter, and the collection grows over time.

bkFX v0.7.0 - Free Effects Suite (VST3/CLAP Win/Linux) [Update June 2022]

bkFX is a collection of audio effects in VST plugin format. The included effects range from engineering/utility processors to rather sophisticated multi-effect units. Features have been carefully designed to combine high versatility with easy usability. bkFX is FREEWARE, see license terms in distribution.

Included effects:

bkChannelTool: A utility plugin which combines various functionality related to processing of stereo signals.
bkChorus: A multi-mode chorus/modulation/stereo expansion effect.
bkClipper: A versatile soft clipper/waveshaper.
bkCrusher: A digital "bit crusher" effect which combines sample word size reduction with sample rate reduction to achieve those nasty digital artifacts which sometimes are just what you are looking for.
bkDelay: A versatile Stereo delay effect. Provides classic digital/analog/tape-style/ping pong/modulated delay, chorus, flanger and other effects. Also well suited for artificial stereo image generation or stereo widening.
bkErosion: a popular degrading effect. Besides the classic effect, can alternatively operate as a ring modulator.
bkFixedFilter: A simple highpass (HP)/lowpass (LP) filter with adjustable slope (6, 12 and 24 dB/oct).
bkFreqSplitter:
Splits the input signal in upto 3 frequency bands and makes them available on separate outputs for further processing.
bkDualFilter: A multi-mode dual filter controlled by a Low Frequency Oscillator (LFO). Available filter modes: 4-pole ladder Lowpass, Highpass, Bandpass, 2-pole Sallen-Key LP, HP, BP, 2-pole Notch, 4-pole Allpass with positive or negative feedback, Comb filter with positive or negative feedback. The ladder and SallenKey filter modes are based on the algorithms of BlauKraut's Charlatan virtual analog synth plugin which emulate classic analog circuits.
The LFO can also control signal amplitude to obtain a tremolo or auto-panning effect.
bkPitch: A lo-fi pitch shifting effect. This does not attempt to provide natural results but produces lots of artifacts which greatly color the sound and give it "character".
bkReverb: high-quality algorithmic reverberator. Equally suited for small acoustic ambiences and huge spaces.
Key features:
very low CPU usage
parameter smoothing where it makes sense
samplerate agnostic (above 44.1 kHz)
supported platforms: Windows VST3 64-bit, Linux VST3 64-bit
Remark 1: Right now, the plugins come without GUI and thus use the host's default controls. A proper GUI will be added later. This may take a while as I first want to revise my development framework.
Remark 2: most effects in bkFX deliberately operate without internal oversampling for the reasons stated here:
http://varietyofsound.wordpress.com/201 ... ing-rates/
Depending on the type of effect, input signal characteristics and settings, digital aliasing or frequency response warping artifacts can occur. In this case, increasing the project samplerate is recommended. In all but the most extreme cases, working at 88.2kHz or 96kHz should yield excellent audio quality with acceptable CPU usage. For the final rendering of a project, an even higher samplerate might be advantagous.
Remark 3: bkFX currently is in Beta stage which means there might be changes coming in following releases that break projects using the effects. Personally, I feel the feature set and DSP/algorithms are fairly complete but I like to wait for your feedback before declaring them stable.

Latest Version
0.7.0 Beta (2022-06-19)
Add CLAP support (see cleveraudio.org)

0.6.1 Beta (2021-06-09)
Fix Linux VST3 compatibility with Ardour and possibly other hosts

0.6.0 Beta (2021-06-05)

* NEW bkDualFilter (replaces bkModFilter): two multi-mode filters that can be routed in serial or parallel
* Available filter modes: 4-pole ladder Lowpass, Highpass, Bandpass, 2-pole Sallen-Key LP, HP, BP, 2-pole Notch, 4-pole Allpass with positive or negative feedback, Comb filter with positive or negative feedback

For those who, like me, run everything on a high resolution/4k/HiDPI screen, you know that many of your software and plugin choices are limited as far as HiDPI scaling support goes for Linux software. This is a nice update that should help change "some" of that. I find this arrival interesting, after the Audacity team just barely decided to move to QT for the Audacity V.4 series:

wxWidgets 3.2 Released After 15k+ Commits, HiDPI, Initial Wayland Support

https://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?pa...s-3.2-Released

Written by Michael Larabel in Free Software on 7 July 2022 at 05:06 AM EDT. 7 Comments

FREE SOFTWARE -- The cross-platform wxWidgets GUI toolkit is out today with version 3.2 that represents more than 15,000 commits and comes the better part of a decade since they started their last stable release series.

The wxWidgets 3.2 release is out today with big improvements for this cross-platform GUI solution. With wxWidgets 3.2 there are numerous build system improvements (including a new CMake build system option), support for native dark mode on modern versions of macOS as well as supporting macOS on Arm, HiDPI support, HTTPS and HTTP/2 support for wxWebRequest, new classes, improvements to existing classes, updated third party libraries, Wayland support, modern OpenCL 3.2+ support, an experimental wxQt port, and tons of bug fixes.

With HiDPI, Wayland support, an a new wxQt alone it's already a big release but this is just a portion of all the significant work that has gone into wxWidgets. The wxWidgets library is used by software like Audacity, FileZilla, KiCad, BitTorrent, and many other programs for cross-platform UIs.

Default Big! Big! Exciting News!!!!

PREEMPT_RT Might Be Ready To Finally Land In Linux 5.20

https://www.phoronix.com/news/520-Ma...ime-PREEMPT_RT

After years in the works, the "PREEMPT_RT" support for building a real-time Linux kernel might finally be mainlined for the upcoming Linux 5.20 cycle if the last few remaining bits are reviewed/signed-off on in time for next week's merge window.

The Linux real-time patch series has been getting smaller with time and quite close to crossing the finish line with just around 50 patches to be merged. This allows for building a real-time / fully preemptible kernel off the mainline code for embedded Linux systems.

For years there had been talk of PREEMPT_RT coming "soon" to mainline but ultimately didn't pan out. The Linux RT developers were held up by funding.

The change this year though was Intel acquiring Linutronix as the Linux consulting firm heavily involved in the PREEMPT_RT patches.

Now today the word is that PREEMPT_RT could be ready for Linux 5.20 if the last two blockers are sorted out this week. Sebastian Andrzej Siewior of Linutronix wrote on the kernel mailing list:
a polite ping for the series. This is one of two road blocks to get RT enabled in v5.20. I don't want to add any pressure just point out that I can't sit still for days since the end is near

Sebastian

That patch series are two signal/ptrace related patches needed for the PREEMPT_RT series. We'll see over the next two weeks during the Linux 5.20 merge window if the PREEMPT_RT patches are all aligned to finally be merged and there are no last minute issues or objections from Linus Torvalds or other key participants.

https://www.phoronix.com/news/AMD-AC...-Sardine-Linux

The colorful fishy codenames are not over for AMD's Linux driver crew! While on the GPU side they have moved to IP block-by-block enablement strategy for their future GPUs, over on the audio co-processor side AMD posted a series of patches today under the "Pink Sardine" codename.

AMD posted a set of patches for enabling the audio co-processor (ACP) on the "Pink Sardine" APU. The ACP block is version 6.2.

This is our first time hearing of AMD's Pink Sardine. Previously AMD used the Green Sardine codename for their Ryzen 5000 "Cezanne" APU graphics work. Meanwhile Yellow Carp was their codename for the Ryzen 6000 "Rembrandt" enablement work on Linux prior to since dropping the codename practice on the GPU side to focus on their more modular enablement strategy that also makes it more difficult to decipher definitive hardware details across the various IP blocks.

Pink Sardine uses ACP v6.2 IP. ACP 6.x was introduced with Rembrandt.

The patch series simply refers to Pink Sardine as, "Pink Sardine platform is new APU series based on acp6.2 design."

With Linux 6.0 AMD introduced Raphael audio support, so Yellow Sardine isn't the desktop Ryzen 7000 series. It's possible that Yellow Sardine is an alternative codename for either the Ryzen 7000 "Phoenix" mobile APUs that have been rumored to succeed Rembrandt or it's also possibly an alternative codename for the upcoming Mendocino budget APUs, but Mendocino was already using the Sabrina codename. In any event, with due time we'll see what is the AMD Pink Sardine.

Default Real-Time "PREEMPT_RT" Work Down To Just 50 Patches Atop Linux 6.0-rc1

I like this catchphrase from the article: "Real-time support on mainline Linux kernels is very near..."

Real-Time "PREEMPT_RT" Work Down To Just 50 Patches Atop Linux 6.0-rc1

https://www.phoronix.com/news/Linux-6.0-RT-Patches

Written by Michael Larabel in Linux Kernel on 16 August 2022 at 06:16 AM EDT. 3 Comments
LINUX KERNEL -- Following Sunday's release of Linux 6.0-rc1, yesterday saw the release of 6.0-rc1-rt1 as the set of patches for providing real-time kernel support atop the upstream code-base. There is just roughly 50 patches to go until the PREEMPT_RT functionality is mainlined!

Particularly since Intel acquired Linutronix back in February, there has been light at the end of the tunnel for getting the Linux real-time work upstreamed. Getting the PREEMPT_RT patches upstreamed has been very close with the end of July state being just two road-blocks left and could be enabled for v5.20 -- now known as v6.0. It didn't happen for the v6.0 merge window, but we are now down to just 50 out-of-tree patches remaining.

With Linux 5.19 the RT patch series consisted of 57 patches but thanks to getting some of the changes prepped in upstream 6.0, it's down to just 50 patches. Of the 50 patches, it's not too bad either as there are five patches for example that are rather trivial for just enabling real-time (RT) support in the Kconfig files for ARM / ARM64 / POWER / x86 / x86_64. There are also a handful of patches each specific to POWER and the i915 graphics driver code.

Real-time support on mainline Linux kernels is very near...

Those curious can see the current Linux 6.0 RT patches for the work that remains out-of-tree. Hopefully this real-time work will manage to cross the finish line later this year with Linux 6.1, which should be a very exciting milestone considering that will also likely be the kernel with MGLRU support for better performance and low-memory handling as well as hopefully being the kernel adding the initial Rust programming language infrastructure.

Real-time support on the mainline kernel should jive nicely with other recent kernel features too like run-time verification for safety critical systems, among other enhancements and hardware support additions emboldening Linux on embedded platforms.

Default WIP: Apricot — Free Hybrid Synthesizer

Coming soon to Linux--a new freeware synth hybrid with sampler layer:

WIP: Apricot — Free Hybrid Synthesizer

https://www.kvraudio.com/forum/viewt...97263#p8497263

https://raw.githubusercontent.com/na...n/apricot1.jpg

https://raw.githubusercontent.com/na...n/apricot2.jpg

https://raw.githubusercontent.com/na...n/apricot3.jpg

To quote the author:

"The plugin does not support MPE directly, but I think most DAWs should be able to map MPE MIDI data into CLAP polyphonic modulation, which is supported.

As for platform support, it currently runs on 32-bit and 64-bit Windows, and I am working on a Linux version. I don't own a Mac though, so there won't be Mac support when I launch it. But it is a possibility for the future"

---------------

As a hybrid plugin, it provides both 3 traditional subtractive oscillators, as well as a sample layer which can load both factory sounds and ones created by the user. This means it's capable of creating a wide variety of sounds, without overwhelming you with too much choice.

Key features:

* 2 main oscillators, with 6 different subtractive waveforms, modulatable phase offset and panorama, with unison modeled off the JP8000's supersaw. There is also an additional third oscillator, with less parameters, intended for use as a sub-oscillator.

* Sample layer. This can run with key tracking enabled or disabled, and can run in both a looped mode or one-shot mode. There are currently 44 factory samples, ranging across 10 categories. The user is able to import their own samples from the standard WAV format, which will be automatically converted into the internal format. The sample database is managed using the FNV-1a hash algorithm to ensure that patches always load the correct sample.

* Waveform previews in the GUI, with user customizable refresh rate.

* CLAP support, with non-destructive polyphonic modulation and voice stacking.

* 2 mod envs and 2 LFOs, each with 2 dedicated modulation slots. There is also a modulation matrix with 8 additional modulation slots, for a total of 16. There are over 70 modulation destinations, and 10 modulation sources. Modulation destinations are selected by clicking on the target control. Dials show both the currently set value as well as their value after modulation is applied. Hovering over a modulated control highlights the modulation slots that control it.

* Arpeggiator and sequencer. The arpeggiator can be configured to not retrigger envelopes, useful for creating chiptune effects.

* 5 effects: reverb (with 4 selectable algorithms), ping-pong delay, stereo phaser, parameter EQ, and a distortion unit. The distortion contains Light, Soft, Middle and Hard algorithms closely modeled after the Access Virus, to achieve a distinctive asymmetric distortion. While modifying the EQ parameters, a preview is displayed of its frequency response; this is immediately hidden when no longer needed.

* Multi-mode filter that can run in low-pass, band-pass or high-pass modes, at 12dB/oct or 24dB/oct. There is a resonance, key track and drive control. The drive can enhanced with a "warm" boost, which mixes in a subtly "inflated" signal.

* Streamlined two page user interface with scaling ranging from 100% to 200%.
Completely custom C++ DSP code without the use of libraries, for a sonic layer tightly coupled with the user interface.

* Automatic CPU feature detection. DSP code optimized for those specific features will then be used, to reduce overall CPU usage.

* Oh, and did I mention it's free? 8)

PipeWire 0.3.57 Adds AAC Decoder, Opus For Bluetooth

Written by Michael Larabel in PipeWire on 3 September 2022 at 05:05 AM EDT. 30 Comments
PIPEWIRE -- PipeWire 0.3.57 was released on Friday as the newest update to this Linux audio/video streams management solution that aims to fill the functionality currently provided by the likes of JACK and PulseAudio.

While a bug fix release, PipeWire 0.3.57 does bring a number of notable changes over the prior release. PipeWire 0.3.57 highlights consist of:

- Making use of org.freedesktop.portal.Realtime when available as the portal for setting threads to real-time from within a sandbox for Flatpaks.

- Opus is added as a new vendor codec with Opus A2DP so that PipeWire can send/receive Opus data over Bluetooth.

- A PipeWire AAC decoder so it can also function as an A2DP AAC receiver.

- Fixing issues of the wrong sample-rate being used.

- Flatpak apps like Zoom with devices=all set will now be granted manager permissions from the Pulse-Server code.

- Various module compilation fixes.

- Other fixes and enhancements.

Downloads and more details on PipeWire 0.3.57 via FreeDesktop.org GitLab.

Then I started my manjaro laptop installation, which is set to the testing branch. No. So I switched to the unstable branch with it. There it was. And yesterday it reached the testing branch of manjaro too.

I don't know exactly when it reached the fedora repos, because I do not start this installation often. And I also don't know exactly when it reached the manjaro-unstable repos. But I really wondered, that it came to the fedora repos so early. Just to mention, it still don't reached the manjaro-stable branch.

I don't know if this is good or bad I'm just watching.

I really don't understand this 'FL Studio' format. It seems a proprietary 'trick' by Image-Line so that they can keep enforcing their walled garden. It's why they ceased to offer VST versions of their plugins, so that you must have FL Studio to use them.

And it's one of the reasons why I'm abandoning that DAW and company slowly, but surely.

This is why I like Fedora. 🙂 It’s as close to bleeding edge as you can get without using a rolling release distro and having to deal with the rolling release maintenance—to me it hits the perfect balance.

Yep. I did too. I own most of their stuff, and I don’t like being locked into a single company’s ecosystem. That’s what I don’t like about Apple as well—I’ve walked away from hundreds of dollars worth of iPad/iPhone purchases, as well as the FL Studio products that I’ve abandoned. In addition, I’ve heard that Imageline is moving to a Challenge/Response copy protection method. Ideologically, Linux is exactly where I belong.
