New theme in progress: Catalyst!
Been working on this for a few days now, starting base was RADO but by the time I'm done I don't think there's going to be a whole lot of shared elements left... Reaaaaally hoping that it won't be too hard to port this over to V4, I picked a really bad time to start working on a theme :/
Here's a current teaser pic just to get a feel for the vibe! Inspired a bit by Nuendo 5...

Me likes! One thing would hold me back from making it my default, and that's these "bars" that visualize the folder levels – they're much too wide IMO.
OTOH I'd never thought that different button sizes in one row could be appealing, but they sure are. Very clever solution.

Woah!
One suggestion... maybe instead of those bars to show folder indenting, might it look nicer to have empty space?
But very nice.

The bars are still RADO, haven't come up with a solution for how I want to display them yet... Probably just going to indent them with empty space TBH! I do like Nick's bar solution though but of course I want to make the themes different!

Just boring old Arial, bold at 14pt! It's the huge font size that makes it look so nice IMO. That's the reason I started modding RADO in the first place. RADO looks a little different on Windows, but on OSX the font is tiiiiny! It was a real struggle to know what track I was working on without specifically looking over and making the effort to read, just uncomfortable... On Windows it looks bigger and easier to read though, so not Nick's fault!
RADO:
Catalyst (PS. I changed the folder indents here, yay or nay? I like 'em!):

Another very nice and smooth theme.
Interesting how many don't really dig the default look in most apps.

damn you windows 95 for giving me an aversion to the color aqua!
I like. if you're going to keep the buttons blue, I'd match the meters to it. or vise versa.

Yeah I think the plan is to change the buttons, I like the VU color! Right now I'm thinking maybe light background buttons with dark button images that light up a bit when you click them, just all gray all around though... We'll see if I can make it work, I really suck at this image editing stuff, I'm sure there are much more efficient ways to do all the crap I end up doing with the pencil tool one pixel at a time...

+1 to the "blank" folder indents. However, how do they look when the folder is collapsed? I really like how visible the bars are in that situation.

What do you guys think of this sort of buttonless transport?
I'm also still open to ideas for the toolbar buttons, I don't really like them being green but I don't know what to do with them... I wanted to do light on dark then brighter when active but every attempt has looked awful!

I like the button less idea.
Quite different but leans towards a better looking scree.
Don't ask me why, but to me it looks less cluttered.

I like the 'buttoned' transport better. I think it fits better visually with the rest of the theme.

I like the buttonless transport!
But perhaps you should make two versions of the theme - one COMPLETELY buttonless ("flat"), and one completely buttoned. By "completely", every button (including toolbar buttons) would be totally embedded in the background, sort of like that LCARS theme
Also, you might wanna change (or make another mod) the green to, I dunno, some reddish hue? Or some ligher grayish?
Anyways, it's an awesomely done job! Gonna use my method of naming/packing icons within ReaperIconsZip for it or...?

Actually working on "buttonless" toolbar now, looks way cleaner!
As far as naming, I've always done it your way But I am not going to be bothered to make any buttons I don't personally use, so there's only going to be a small handful of the non-default ones in there anyways, it's just way too much work.
PS. Sorry, the green stays for the MCP/TCP buttons and VUs Just the toolbar buttons I didn't like!

Too bad about incomplete inclusion of all the default icons
BTW I have a better idea for your theme - instead of the frame around icon, why not color the mask to that green you're using? Would look much better! White - off, green - on. No frames or anything, just purely flat toolbar. And I guess arming the buttons might work out better that way, too.
And since I find your theme cool, seems like I'll have to chip in with the rest of default toolbar icons done the same way, if you can't be bothered to do it.

Will try, trying to get away from the green a little bit though, it's starting to take over the whole theme Could turn out cool though, good idea!
If I had a way to "batch build" the buttons it wouldn't be so bad but it's like a minute per button at god knows how many buttons :/ It's awful!

OH MAN! I am so sorry I can't help you out right now (because I'm not home)
But I have a PSD file (Photoshop CS2) which has ALL masks for all default icons in separate layers, and you just add your button background, apply layer blending effects (for hover and pressed, if needed - I usually just do some gradient and color overlays), and there you go saving at least 5 icons per minute!
I'll send you the PSD tomorrow. That's how I did the updated RADO icons, in fact - first I set up masks as separate layers (separate layer for normal, hover, pressed), then I put those 3 in a group with the name of the PNG, and then I sorted the groups in 3 big groups (default main toolbar icons, WT extended icons (toolbar_icons folder), and a couple of my icons (floating toolbar and MIDI editor clickmode).
It will help you for sure!

Cheers, that will help a lot actually! Still experimenting with the best option for these toolbar buttons but I'm sure it'll work itself out eventually...
I'm trying to keep it as neutral, clean, simple and easy on the eyes as possible, while keeping every element easily readable and understandable without having to look for it... It's coming along well so far but there's always challenges...

Yo Adam, just came across this thread while searching for a complete RADO icon package. Gotta say that this is looking gorgeous. I love how you stick with black/gray/white as much as you can and leave the important details to only one color. This is going to be the ultimate Reaper theme.
I realize it is a lot of work, but the theme will be much better with a complete icon package, as people are always customizing the toolbar with new buttons and it is nice to have as many options as the default theme has for this. If the files that EvilDragon have are the way I´m thinking they are, I can make all the other buttons for you.
The frameless buttons are gorgeous. They might get confusing after you make them all frameless, as the icon size differences can be weird, but this is something that we gotta see to know for sure. You can indicate the on/off state of each button using different shades of gray instead of green. This will help not letting green take over the whole theme.
ps: Any chance of contacting Cocko´s to make this the new default theme?

Alright so here she is with the flat toolbar, ignore the transport, still a work in progress...
Might have to add a bit more contrast between on/off states but otherwise I think I like it.

your theme is the only one i have seen that's giving the one i currently use a run for its money, and that's saying alot, because i will undoubtedly have to change a few things around for my liking and i wouldn't invest that time unless i liked another theme alot better.
you chose nice fonts, made things nice and clear and all that.
I really like the white and big font of your Mute and "Single buttons, i think maybe a little more of the white to make certain other things pop might be nice also. maybe whiter faders? idk. listen to your gut, you're doing well so far.
the new buttons at the top though, i think it's not the fact there is no fram around then that i find strange, that's a kind of cool clean idea that if clear enough could be real cool, except the way it is now i find looks strange because of the panel the buttons should be sitting on.
they look too flat now i find, so it looks odd to me the way the tracks disappear under it. as though it's too flat, idk looks odd to me. maybe if you could make that pannel look a little 3d, maybe a beleveld edge slightly, a little shadow or something, or maybe back to buttons, idk. it's too bad you couldn't cast a shadow over the tracks beneath it... unless you could have a shadow over transparency? if you could watch the tracks disappear under a drop shadow that would be sick. i don't think reaper can do that though.
personally i'd prefer a grey and white and maybe some blue and red kind of color scheme, but what you've done is nice.
the tracks pane looks a little under done compared to the coolness of the rest too, it's kind of confusing at the top and stuff. maybe some of the white there? idk if that would work, i feel it could use something it looks kind of bland up there. simple is good though, but it seems a little too simple i think. nad at the same time too noisy i guess cause of all the clutter, but maybe clearer color separation in a simple and clean way or something could make it nicer.

Loved the flat toolbar. Agree that you could add a bit contrast on the off stance (not much, though). The only thing that is buggin me a bit is the "fx" and "io" buttons glowing frames (the LED is ok). Such a smooth green looks better flat like you did on the "monitor" button.
