that's just it, you're right i tried to apply these elements (taking into account reaper's interface limitations) but soon it bored me to death ))) and i decided to show this variation as it is, maybe it will suggest some good idea to developers.
i think that main aim of graphic design of ANY program interface is not multicolored and shiny buttons, but visual comfort first of all. so i guided by this principle when i moved elements from their original position. IMHO

it's so gorgeous, individual, modern and clean - I'd love it if REaper could look like this - please do make those suggestions to Justin!

Very nice. It reminds me one of the best themes for Ext1.4.
I like the mixer a lot.

but what about the SnapOffset flags, for eg? (the rounded corners take them away.)
(plus i'm missing the zero-lines of the audio Items, but thats just me)
my 2 bits
PS: i like your plugin names. "Ultra Shitizer" LOL.

calm down guys! i'm quite agree with your opinion about weak points in this design, nevertheless i'm more musician than graphic designer ))) but for now it's just only concept, 'cos otherwise i'd prefer to make and upload finished reaper theme, ready to use right here and right now, according design/elements placement requirements that we have.
there are several problems that prevent to realize this theme. for example one of them is placement of important elements: i can't move buttons 'mute' and 'solo' as i wish. i can't make mixer slider blue line follow the slider level.
i know this theme isn't ideal at all, lack of VU's and other little details will raise questions like 'hey! it's cool, but where...?'
in certain way this 'theme' is a provocation. i hope that my variation will put some useful design ideas into developer's mind (i believe they're really great guys). in my opinion, reaper has one essential advantage - it's very flexible. but i think maybe it's make a sense to give reaper users a little more free hand (i mean details that unrealizable for now, 'cos of original design limitations - size, placement etc.).
ps. huh! 0_o
pps. sorry for my english, guys, i hope i said clear enough

It looks great.
I'd really like to use this regardless of where the solo and mute buttons are
WoW the updated version looks even better.
I fully support more flexibility for theme developers, I'm sure it'll come in time.

Very nice concept sketch! I think it looks fantastic!
Some of the labels (text) on buttons could be a bit cleaner, but this has full potential! Of course, some of the proposals can't be implimented due to Reaper limitations, but I look forward to seeing the final thing!

I love it. This (or something close to it) needs to be the default Reaper skin IMHO. It doesn't look like much other software out there and better represents Reaper's forward thinking attitude than the current default.
I think that if someone opened a magazine and saw a picture of this in the contents then they'd be jumping straight to that page to find out what it is.
Anyway, like others have said previously - I don't mind too much if this skin can't be fully realised, just get this bad-boy finished so I can use it

Yeah it would make a good skin to include with Reaper. I think Justin prides on keeping the installer size small, but for Reaper 3.0 I think a "best of" skin pack could be cool.
This one and Brice's look awesome, as for currently available skins my favorite is easily the uberXonix series.
To be honest, I think most users tend to prefer skins that remind them of their previos DAW, but this doesn't look like anything I've seen.

This theme alone could put Reaper firmly in the lead. It looks totally pro, This should be the default theme and all effort should be made to get it to happen. BTW the VU meter could easily be incorporated inside the sliders as a transparency, thus saving real estate and adding clarity and simplicity.

P.S.: I think the VU meter could be a little bit wider. IMO

What if clicking on it would transform the fader into a full-sized VU?

you should put the thin VU in the track view and put the wide VU in the mixer view. just my opinion.
also, i think it looks great fit into the existing elements order. just change the background and it's excellent.

Good Ideas...
Many of the ideas here are very usable in vs 2. You will need backgrounds that fit both the tcp and mcp and I second the request of using the wider meter on the mixer view. As far as meters behind the fader- it can block things at times, but it's a very cool concept (reminds me of Logic Pro).
+1 on this as a new (usable theme)

oh, come on! once you fix the edges and fix the name-thingie with the white and the black it'll be totally sweet! and don't forget the RIGHT grey for the tcp!
you are doing a kick-ass job!

Would it not be possible to keep the dark grey of the original concept? This gradient fill doesn't really do it for me.
