Default Midi editor awkward zooming

The present midi editor zooming with mousewheel is inconsistent with itself leading to some annoying behavior when zooming.

If you zoom anywhere where the viewport would not pass the left of the midi item you are editing it behaves as expected. The zoom centers around the mouse cursor.

However, if you would zoom to expose anything beyond the left of the current item, the viewport snaps to the left of the item, so you are no longer zooming on the mouse cursor.

It would be more consistent if we always zoomed toward the mouse cursor.

See me struggle to zoom centered on these left notes:

My interest in generative music stems from my hope to never open the MIDI editor again.

It's the kind of thing which just feels horrible to use but you can't quite put your finger on why.

I've just realised, too, that if it's a looped item with some of a repetition showing, it actually zooms fine on the left until you reach a low enough zoom level! >_>

Yeah, unfortunately, I have seen this behavior with other DAWs as well.
Not sure why this behavior is regarded as meaningful.
I fully agree, the zoom center should never move away from the mouse/play cursor and always be kept in focus.

Surely there is a way around this?

All I want is the midi editor zoom to work like the audio window?

you can see me struggling with zoom in my most recent gif in the latest pre thread.

my workaround has been to use actions to make the editor zoom to item bounds when opening the item

There are also problems with the notation editor:

also relevant: there's a problem zooming when the midi editor is "synced to arrange view"

(has since been fixed)

This is still a problem. It seems like it should be so simple to fix. When you zoom in, just don't do the extra logic to snap to the left of the current item.

It's such a simple thing but the current method is so frustrating and illogical.

If you are new to Reaper (by your count of posts), you will find this more often. It's best to learn to code and create your own scripts to fix some problems.

I am not new to Reaper. If you notice my join date I joined in 2015, and I have been using reaper since 2010. I also know how to code. I am a professional software developer.

Unfortunately, I don't think this is an issue which can be solved with a script. There is nothing in the api to make a continuous change to the behaviour of the editor scrolling.

Considering this is clearly not a well designed behaviour in the first place, and there is an obviously better solution, it really should just be fixed, not hacked into being sensible with scripts.

+1. That was more of a general observation regarding Reaper.
