Default New Song - Free Time

My latest cosmic thoughts converted to audio.

I'm playing bass, 12-String electric guitar, mandolin, drums, Vox organ and singing all the vocals, plus feature intro and outro solos from my former band mate and friend Joey Larsen, who's been dead now for almost five years.

I have miles and miles of Joey playing on things that never got used so I pulled a couple clips of him to use for the solos.

I call this one "Free Time", which is a play on words. I'm an early retiree and the song is in 6/8 and 4/4 with phrasing that intertwines within it.

Great song... Love the time sig changes. Could have been longer, perhaps?

Production was clean and precise, to my old ears.

cheers

nice song...

to me... and my hearing isn't what it once was... this seemed to have a bit of high end sizzle that detracted... just me.

Cool song but I think what most people are hearing is a serious lack of low end. At least that is what I'm hearing.

Thanks for all the comments/suggestions guys. I tweaked the mix to give it a little more bass and reduce a bit of treble, but freeking SoundClick has recently revamped their site and the option to replace the existing file with an updated one is either broken or doesn't like my HOSTS file, so I haven't been able to upload it.

I get a free comped account so I can't bitch about it too much, but I may have to contact their tech support, or just kill the one that is up there now and upload the adjusted one as if it's a brand new song or something. I might try booting Windows too and see if that has any effect.

Well I was finally able to upload an updated version of this song based on the feedback here, plus made a couple of adjustments I thought it needed. (I had to install another browser coz I have Firefox too protected)

https://soundclick.com/share.cfm?id=13930912

I am using the Harrison Mastering EQ and had bumped the brightness too much in the original version. Plus as Jeff pointed out, the bass guitar was behind in the mix, so those two things were addressed.

A couple of items I decided needed changed were my 12-String electric was behind the mix and my monster fake Kontakt/Guitar Rig/ToneLib guitar was too out front.

So now the 12-String is more visible in the mix hard left, the mandolin which is hard right I left alone, and the monster fake guitar with Leslie that is dead center has been backed off a bit to let the 12-string and mandolin carry more of the water.

See what you guys think of this mix. Thanks for all the input.

Sounds completely excellent to me. I listened to "Protractor" as well. You really got something going on there Glennbo, great arrangements, performances etc.

Thanks Morgon. I originally was going to make this song an instrumental, but after the first musician I was going to have add some tracks was busy, I changed my mind and did it as a vocal song.

Also, I forgot to mention that the pic for this song was taken from my kayak going down the river near here. Wife and I love taking it out in the mid morning when everybody else has to be at work.

Im awaiting a stereo Gig FX Mega Wah to be built for my live rig.

Thanks for listening and commenting. The wah on this is my old Digitech RP7 tube preamp/pedalboard with a friend I played in bands with for 15 or more years playing my Gibson L6S Midnight Special through it. He past away five years ago but I have so many unused recordings with him that I fished a couple of solos out of the archives to use as the intro and outro solos.

Listened to the new version. Nice and bright with enough low end for me. (And I'm a bass player....)

Would have liked the odd bit of vocal harmony but that's a personal preference.

Thanks Barry.

It was kind of weird how this one came about, as I usually would do harmony somewhere in a song. This was going to be an instrumental, but when that didn't turn out, I grabbed my vocal mic and just jamming around wrote all the lyrics in about an hour.

Yeah, when you are trying too hard it sounds forced, but when the juice is flowing the song almost writes itself and sounds natural.

Really cool song and performances. Awesome drumming!

The only thing mix wise that stands out to me is that the drums lack weight and the cymbals are a bit too prominent. The cymbals distracted me from the song.

On making it longer - I would have liked to hear that solo at the end go on to play over another section then end with the chorus again.

Thanks Judders. I'll be doing another mix and I've already made a tweak to the overheads based on your feedback. The drums are four mics, so most of it is the overheads. I'm in the process of trying to get a drum mix nailed down so I can save it as a track template. This whole song was kind of thrown together as well as written and recorded on the fly.

A guitarist I used to work with once told me it was better to leave the listener wishing there was more rather than making them wish it would hurry up and end so I guess I achieved that.

Thanks again for the feedback. Really appreciate it!

Yep!

Ever tried de-essing overheads around the 7-9k range?

Never tried it on drums, but I had a guy track a Strat once that was too snappy and a de-esser fixed that right up.

After your post about the brightness on the drums I pulled the EQ back a bit around 3500-4000, which I've got set real wide so it affected frequencies getting up in the 10k band. I had it pushed to +3db and now have pulled it back to +1db and the drums don't sound dull, but it did take some edge off the cymbals.

I've uploaded what is now hopefully the last mix for this song.

https://soundclick.com/share.cfm?id=13930912

One thing I'm noticing is that backing off some more highs on the drum track the mandolin and 12-String now poke out a little more than before, so I guess having less cymbal brightness opened up some of that space for them.

Oh yeah man, that's a huge improvement for me. Now I can move the spotlight around in my head and focus on the different elements without those cymbals distracting me, but the cymbals are still nice and present.

Thumbs up!

Wow Glenbo, I think this tune sounds great. I always thought there was something missing on the last mixes but this one has a weight to it that the other don't have. I love the general balance of the song.

Thanks Mcgiver, I'm real happy with how this turned out, and the drum setup has been saved as my standard acoustic drums template.

The seven tracks for drums, which consists of a parent folder, four drum mics, a room mic, and a plate reverb track got saved as my goto acoustic drums template.

I had never created a project template till today, but I made one that has drums, bass, guitars, and vocal tracks from this project. I omitted the Kontakt guitar and mandolin from the template since those are less likely to end up in a lot of projects, and I have the Kontakt guitar saved as a track template already, but not the mandolin, which I still need to do.

Groovy tune. I hear some Blue Oyster Cult in this jam, and I love it.
