If you select a track with no waveform and hold the Shift key while pressing the up arrow, are you able to see it?

Sounds as though you may be storing your reapeaks files in a cache which doesn't allow user privileges. Check REAPER Preferences--> General--> Paths (Path Settings) to see where they're currently saved. If "Store all peak caches (.reapeaks) in alternate path is checked, try unchecking it, and leaving blank the field below that ("Use alternate peak cache path...")

Right click the item -> Item Processing -> Normalize Item (common gain) ? to check
The level of normalizing is set somewhere in preferences, but the default should do.

Thank you RobertP. I now have actual waves by using Item processing and clicking Normalize items.
Now how do I make that the default?

I am pretty sure that not seeing a wav form is to do with how 'hot' you are recording.

Normalizing in your case, as I described, raises the volume closer to zero, AND increases the size of what you see, but means you may have to adjust the fader down a bit. Somewhere in preferences, I think, is where you set the normalize level.

If you use toleolu's method but highlight the item,(not sure about 'track') then shift up arrow, it raises what you see but not the volume.

I do think you need to look at your hotness of recording though.

Ah thanks

"The Display gain slider can be used to increase or decrease the peak height, but do not affect volume" page 143.

but.. never seen that before, 1 always used the shift up arrow.
I am sure that there is a preference for setting the level at which you normalize to but searching the manual doesn't help.

EDIT: thinking about it more, I have been using audition as an editor which asks what level you want to normalize to so it may not be in Reaper. A google search for normalizing in Reaper shows lots of forum discussion but looks like it was never implemented.

Right click an item, choose Item Processing, and you'll see two options to Normalize. Also, in a recent update, a Normalize button was added to the Render screen so you can Normalize the entire project to different levels.
