Default MIDI overdub stopped working

hi there. i have used midi overdub in the past.
when i tried yesterday after updating reaper version it doesnt work for me.
are there any new functions i need to know about?

edit:

i can record and overdub, but i cant hear what i am playing at the same time.

i changed format to save midi files as .mid recently. would this have something to do with it?

I'm not sure, but I think probably not.

Listed changes to MIDI functionality show nothing relevant:

Check that you haven't accidentally turned record monitoring off; it's the speaker icon on the track.

Also right click on the record button to check what it is that you're monitoring.
