Default How to make toolbar buttons change with state?

I was trying to change some of the icons on the main toolbar, now the ones that animated based on their various states don't change for instance, ripple editing. Even after going back to the standard icon for V4 it doesn't change when I toggle ripple editing.

How do I get them to animate again? This sucks

Two states buttons will behave properly in the toolbars, three or more
state buttons (like ripple) will not (except in the default main toolbar
with the original set of images for all states).

Been reported and ranted about, so I'm sure Cockos is aware of it.

Some of the default main toolbar buttons need to be assigned to an icon inside the theme's image folder instead of an icon inside Data\toolbar icons. It's because they need access to two or three images to work as you are used to from earlier versions.

Alas, once you assigned one of them to an ordinary toolbar icon from the icon picker window, I don't know of a way to reassign them to the theme image folder images.

The only way I found so far to get back to eg a fully working ripple icon is to remove the one you changed and drag it back in from the list of default main toolbar buttons (right hand side of the customization window).

If you want to change the design of those buttons you need to edit the appropriate toolbar_yaddayadda.png's in the theme's image folder.
