Default Latency issue...

I am certain it has to do with my Saffire6 USB interface and it's settings into Reaper. But all my trouble shooting hasn't helped (so far). There is a 5-6 sec wait before any keystroke is acted on. If I hit play in Reaper..wait 6 seconds and then it will play. I can move the cursor fast, no problem there. I can widen the screen to decrease it, no problem there. Its just audio problems. The wait is the entire PROBLEM.
I have a feeling it has to do with The setting (preferences and their relation to the Saffire6 USB. And yes, I did update all drivers.
If you OR ANYONE has a suggestion..send it along. I am just doing trial and error and because of my lack of knowledge..weeks later..I have no solution.

BIG EDIT : 4/3/2020 THE PROBLEM IS SOLVED ! Go to the LAST POST To see what fixed it -GtrGeorge

Add info: OS is win10
Computer is Dell Inspiron with i7 2.6GHz speed,8 cores, 16GB RAM CPU
D drive has 763GB Free C Drive has 26 GB Free

What are your current setting under Preferences > Audio > Device (can you maybe post a screenshot)?
And what's the sample rate and buffer block size?

In the meantime, you might also find some useful hints here:

Which version of the saffire 6 do you have?
I had endless problems with mine years ago & eventually both focusrite & I gave up on getting it working reliably (reasonable latency, etc.,) when I switched from a Dual core pentium to a dual core i5.

I had assumed that by now focusrite had updated the drivers for the Saffire 6 along with all the other first generation USB interfaces, so you might want to double check you are using the latest driver.

I am using a Saffire6 USB, my cpu is i7 and formerly I had no problems....but naturally I changed a few settings and NOW have problems. So it's ME. Not Focusrite that painted me into a corner. I will post some screenshots and to YOU and some others it's probably childs-play to tell me what I'm doing wrong. have a look..I'm working at those screen shots right now.
PS: yes I have the most current Focusrite drivers.

Default photos are a bit blurry

PS: My photos are a bit blurry because I had to do a real work-around just to get them uploaded..makes me wonder how other iphone 6 users get properly resolved images up here (when the limit is 64 per image)...
..........yeah, another thing I gotta learn. DOH!

looks like you are using asio4all - have you tried using the proper asio driver for your interface?

yes, that ALONE did not solve any problems I have (tiny pops, clicks, latency on all start, stop and record commands..about 3 seconds delay every single time.)

In Fact when I try that I get a message
"Hardware does not support that sample rate..."

How weird ...it's a FOCUSRITE Driver!!!! For Pete's Sake.

Ive tried to change sample rate to fix the message, makes no diff

Quickest way to attach bigger images is to upload them to imgur.com/upload and then attaching the link to the post.

In the ASIO4ALL Control Panel, I'd recommend to uncheck the following options (which are currently enabled in your screenshot):
  • Hardware Buffer
  • Always Resample 44.1kHZ <> 48.0KHz

More info about troubleshooting ASIO4ALL can be found here: https://www.image-line.com/support/f...s_asio4all.htm

from your pics it looks like you have a sample rate of 441000 in reaper - obviously knock a zero of the end if you are trying to set the sample rate in Reaper

and another thing to consider, can you confirm you have no FX on your master track etc. that may be adding unwanted latency to your system?

In regards to the dedicated Focusrite driver:

In addition to the link I already posted in post #2 (https://support.focusrite.com/hc/en-...er-setup-guide) here's also a video about setting up a Focusrite interface with the dedicated Focusrite ASIO driver (although the example using a Scarlett, the steps are the same for the Saffire): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B3W1NowUFA4

If the problem persists: did you already double-check if you have the correct Focusrite driver installed for your Saffire 6 model (because it looks like there are two different revisions of this unit - Saffire 6 USB and Saffire 6 USB 2.0)?

Also, uncheck these two options at the bottom of Reaper's audio preferences (which are currently enabled in your screenshot):
  • Pre-zero buffer output buffers, useful on some hardware (higher CPU use)
  • Ignore ASIO reset messages (needed for some buggy drivers)

Just in case: if you haven't already, I'd recommend to restart your computer at least once, as well - since a lot of settings are changed at the same time.

Yes i did that, and for good measure prior..i reloaded the drivers,,,,the teeny lil pops are gone...but i think mainly because i made the audio buffers larger...but the main problem is latency and i still wait 5-8 seconds for any command of start/stop etc to actually start
fwiw: i have an external UAD-2 for fx..so i try not to overload my pc doing fx in reaper.
still not sure why so much latency. Rest of the computer works fast.

Still 8 sec delay on all start/stop commands etc
This song uses 24 tracks and true, plug-ins...but even if I open a new project with one track..the problems are in that project, too.

Is this a Voodoo Curse?

Default I think I FOUND it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think I FOUND it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
having all this downtime helps!

The Buffer size was to small. As I increased the size....the pausing before activity became shorter. Much Better!!!!!

It took alot of trial and error, But it is more acceptable, by far,

Thank you!!!!

"Pre-zero buffer output buffers, useful on some hardware (higher CPU use)"

This is ticked in my Reaper device.

What difference does this make if I untick it?

Default THE SOLUTION:

THE SOLUTION:

My Set-up is Reaper and a Saffire 6 USB interface
The drivers that WORK for me (and my Dell PC) are ASIO4ALL
My latency is down to 3 seconds for my song that uses alot of VSTs, and has 24 tracks...I consider this acceptable, and not a hinderance.

BUT NOTHING WORKED WELL UNTIL I...

Went into Options-->Preferences-->Audio Device-->ASIO Configuration window open and set to 2048 size for ASIO Buffer Size.

Once I did that, my latency was an acceptable 2-3 seconds to start or stop or record. I am OK with that, and ALL is SOLVED. No pops or clicks, too. Thank you to everyone who Helped Me. This forum is VERY helpful, because of the nice helpful people here. THANK YOU.

2 or 3 seconds is still ridiculously high unless you're using multiple high latency plugs in series.

Here's what the tooltip shows (the text seems to be cut off at the end - but I guess it probably should say something like '... in certain situations'):

And here's what's mentioned in this post (https://forum.cockos.com/showpost.ph...36&postcount=2) about this:

In comparison, there's also a Pre-zero plug-in output buffers option under Preferences > Plug-ins > Compatibility:
