Default Audio systems confusion

Greetings,

I've set up to record from my Rode Soundfield mic.

The four outputs from the mic go into a Behringer UMC audio interface and the four outputs from that straight into my PC (Windows 10 O.S).

In Reaper I set the audio system to ASIO and the UMC driver is enabled.

The problem I have is that I can only listen to what I've recorded by changing the audio system from ASIO to one of the other audio systems listed.

Where are the speakers/headphones (used for listening) currently connected to?

In general, the preferred option is to connect them directly to the UMC, as well - so you're only using a single audio device - and not two different ones (like, for instance, the UMC as input and the built-in one of your computer as output).

My amplifier/speakers are connected to the audio out on my PC.

I can listen via the phones socket on the UMC.

So, I need to feed my amplifier with the output from the UMC too. I haven't tried that yet because I don't have the connection leads, at the moment.

I can see why that's the preferred option but is it possible, in principle, to run two audio systems without switching between them in the Options menu?

One option is using WASAPI as Audio system in Reaper and then choosing different input/output devices there (the listed options are the recording & playback devices enabled in the Windows Sound Settings).

Or you can try using ASIO4ALL for making an Aggregate Audio Device of multiple audio devices. And then selecting this one in Reaper (Audio System: ASIO / ASIO Driver: ASIO4ALL).

it is possible to use separate devices for in & out, depending on the driver (WASAPI, directsound, waveout & asio4all can all do it - but proprietary asio usually can't)

edit -oops, Solger beat me to it
