Text editing along audio crashes my computer

Hello,
I am having issues lately (before I used multiple video editing and was doing fine) with my 4 years old Lenovo thinkpad e540 freezing after few video edits like text size, position etc. (nvidia, geforce).

I have the graphic driver for nvidia updated, however, lately it became a bit sluggish elsewhere, however reaper is the only one I am experiencing crashes with.

Any ideas what to check, how to avoid crashes?
Video prefered size in project settings helps a bit, but not entirely.
