Default Rendering mono mix to mp3

I need to convey the difference between summed (L+R) mono VS stereo to someone, and I loaded a mix that I know suffers bad cancellation when summed to mono into Reaper. I loaded it as a high-def stereo track, and confirmed via listening that the cancellation I expect occurs when I put the master mix track in "mono" mode.

Fidelity is not the issue here. I'm OK with "good" mp3 files. I rendered the stereo track (via LAME) to mp3, no problem. mp3 file plays back in stereo. Then I put the master track in "mono" mode and did the same thing, and it plays back in stereo, not mono. It's as if I never engaged the "mono" feature on the master track.

Huh? Any thoughts? Why wouldn't the "mono" mode on the master track dictate what gets written to the (stereo) mp3 file? I don't care if it writes identical L & R channels, or even if it plays back at a different volume level. I just don't want the stereo mix. I want the (summed L+R) mono mix. On an mp3.

Well as you discovered the mono button on the master is a monitoring only function. It will not affect your mix.

Place a plugin with Mono option on the the master bus insert.

I'd suggest a suitable Reaper stock plug..sure there is one but as I closed my DAW just now I couldn't tell you which one!

A1 StereoControl is a third party free vst that can certainly do it.

EDIT: In fact you can also do it without any plug, switch the channel pan to dual panner (right click I think?)....put both to centre.

OK, thanks, that did it. Panned both to center.

I don't understand the logic behind the master "mono" button being monitor only.

Click the IO button on the master track. Set Width to 0%.

There's also an option under render to render as mono.

It's a common thing to quick check a mix in mono periodically, and a mono monitoring button is the easiest way. On consoles this button doesn't change the mix just the monitoring of it.
